I just pulled the original 327 from my 65 el camino and need some help deciding whether to rebuild the 327 or go with new crate 350. I am not looking to keep the car all original. Just a nice driver. Also I don't know what kind of shape the 327 is in. Might need extensive parts labor etc. Thanks for your input

If you can afford it, go for the crate engine and put your 327 in a corner somewhere and forget about it.

It really depends on your budget and how much you want to do yourself.

Murph,it would help alot if we knew what your budget is and what your intensions are for the car?
If your not looking for a real fast ride the 327 could do fine with a bore and std rbld as rbld parts(rings/pistons/bearing/etc) are cheap for a stock to mild perf 327 rbld,it all depends on what your looking to do and your $ avalable.

EVERYONE is doing crate motors now. They're too generic and take the personal aspect out of your car. Be different and enjoy the experience of being a part of the build yourself! It sounds better when you can tell someone at a car show you actually had involvement in the parts selection and build vs. "I just threw a crate motor in it"!

Thanks everyone. I am about a year away from installing an engine. Had to get it out of the way for the rest of my body work. Just wanted to make sure I was making the right decision.

It's all in where you want to concentrate your time and $$
What version 327 do you have? if it's a L-79 then consider rebuilding it. If it's a 275 hp maybe not.
The problem with rebuilding the motor yourself is the rapid expansion of the project cost. You can end up spending over $3000 for a motor that can't out gun the $1626 290 hp brand new 350 crate motor http://www.sdpc2000.com/catalog/120/products/228960/290HP-350-Long-Block-Pre-Emissions-GM-Crate-Engine.htm
And to make it worse, it could throw a rod or such soon afterward.
Don't get me wrong, I tore apart my old 305 and ran it for nearly 100,000 miles before it started getting real tired, and spun a bearing and ate a cam along the way but fixed both things cheaply. It was fun to do and I enjoyed it.
I am starting a 454 build project, which will be REAL fun and I lucked out as far as my core has a great 4 bolt block and very nice crank. The heads and everything else is scrap. My build cost should end up below the price of a ZZ-4 as the engine core was a trade for a pile of interior parts, and I found a great set of clean used 049 heads and a killer deal for $200 on some new Eagle 7/16" bolt size rods, just about the cost to resize and install new bolts on the stock 3/8" truck rods.
Seriously consider you budget and priorities and go forward and build your car!!
