: Criteria for a Frame Off

I may have posted this before so I apolgize
if it is a repeat. I am just wondering what the criteria is for a doing a frame off compared to not. The underside of my Monte is not too messy so I am considering just sandblasting it and POR-15.

Personally, if it doesn't look too bad underneath, and it isn't meant for show, I wouldn't worry about a frame off.

However, I would avoid sandblasting underneath. You'll end up with sand between bushings and in other inaccessible places. This will cause more damage than it will cure. We had the sub-structure of our drilling rig sandblasted a few years ago. It was great for the iron, but the sand got into some bearings in some of my 3-phase electric motors, and they burned up before we saw it coming.

You'll be better off just cleaning everything really well,sandpaper it as best you can, POR 15 any rusty spots, then shoot some paint under there. That is, if you are using it as a driver and not as a show car.

Of course, this is only my opinion.... I could be wrong.

Yes the car is a driver and I just want it to look decent. You are right also about the sand getting everywhere if you had only the bare shell(no doors,front clip only) the cleanup would be much easier. The cleanup after sandblasting must be a big deal and I can see if sand gets into certain places disaster can strike! I was think of using a wire brush and a high speed grinder but I have heard this is very labour intensive and I can see why. Anyways something to ponder over.
