rubadub Feb 20th, 06, 1:18 AM It seems like a lot of people are using SPI primers. I might even do it myself.
They say it is cheaper and better then some of the other expensive primers.
They have been in business since 1996, they employ between eleven and 50 people, doing about 2.5 million a year in business.
Is there any chance of long term failure of this primer.
The big paint companies spend a lot of money testing there products, yet I keep hearing SPI is the way to go.
Could anybody enlighten me on this.

bowtie6872 Feb 20th, 06, 5:10 PM YOUR PRIDE AND jOY OR A fender bender repair on a gross getter?
if the top coat fails was it the primer...? better to
test on your beater not your toy... if it fails on a beater no big deal if it fails on the toy well.
whats cheaper
paying more for known name brand primer etc and painting it once or
saving on the off brand primer etc and maybe painting it twice..
it's like the say'n
never enough time to do it right the first time but always enough time to do it twice...
rubadub Feb 20th, 06, 6:22 PM It's going to be going on my pride and joy. Seems funny, you hear a lot of guys saying how good spi is, but not many comments. Looks like ppg epoxy, unless I hear more.

70isfine Feb 20th, 06, 6:52 PM Go to Hotrodders.com bulliten board forum. Lots of guys there use it. I have heard nothing but good about them. I will use it on my next project. The owner of SPI Barry K is very active on that forum.
Skeeveman Feb 20th, 06, 7:39 PM SPI is one of those oddball companies that you dont see very often, and I think it is because it is owned by a very knowledgable body/paint man that is very devoted to his products. There isnt a lot of mass advertising, so that keeps the costs down a LOT. Barry believes in his stuff and is going to give you one on one customer service that no major company can give you. The products are great, theres no doubt about that.
MARTINSR Feb 21st, 06, 10:32 AM I have not used it, but I have had lunch with Barry, the owner of SPI. :) No kidding, met with him at NACE and had lunch with him. He IS a hands on kinda guy and from what I have heard produces a super high quality product. He is a super anal guy (I mean that in a good way) and has restored a LOT of cars (he has owned about 80 Vettes) and built these products to perform as he would want on his restorations.
He does have a short paint line, three colors, Red, Black (the truest black on the market) and yellow I believe. I will be using his products on the next project I have lined up at home.
There is a forum dedicated to SPI products.... AND some super metal fabrication talk! http://spi.forumup.org/index.php?mforum=spi

GRN69CHV Feb 21st, 06, 11:38 AM I've only used the SPI Epoxy so far, it has far exceeded my expectations. Great coverage (black), sticks to everything like glue (including 80 grit DA'd bare metal). When fully cured it can be sanded out. I would like to use the SPI Universal Clear over my correct Frost Green base- which most likely will be from the OMNI line (for cost and compatibility with the OMNI 2K I am using).
baddbob71 Feb 21st, 06, 4:05 PM I've been using the epoxy primer and compared it to the PPG, Akzo Nobel, and Dupont stuff I've used in the past 20 years it beats all adhesionwise. Flexibility is also unbeatable. I'll be doing a comparison test on multiple bare metal primers including self etch and wash primers that will include corrosion resisitance, adhesion, and flexibility over the next two months. I just picked up the 36 test panels from my sheetmetal supplier yesterday. Test results will be available to all here and on Hotrodder's when complete. Bob
rubadub Feb 21st, 06, 4:35 PM Sounds good Bob, I know I will be looking forward to your results, something like that has to take a lot of time and money.

I know I appreciate it, and I'm sure a lot of others will also.
