I have a V Matic in my stock console. It looks great, and I wired it up to light when I turn the key on. I can send you a pic if you PM me with your email address. I used some steel tubing, about 1/2", and cut them to length to mount the shifter to the floor, and the console mounts to the shifter via the plate. It is very sturdy.

I had one installed in my 70 and did something similar - welded two pieces of angle iron together for a base, then drilled and tapped the holes to mount the shifter, incredibly solid, i wouldn't just mount it to the floor.
