Lou, I really don't know much about welders, but do a search on this. I have read alot of posts on welders in here.

For bodywork, 100% of people that Ive seen suggest go with a gas using MIG setup over a plain wirefeed. For sheetmetal and such the gas >>>> flux cored wire. That weldpak might have a MIG upgrade avaiable, if so go that route. If not get a model that does...

Does'nt flux core wire create its own sheilding gas? I really don't want to be filling a tank everytime I need a weld.

Depends on what your intentions are... what are you going to do with the welder? Flux core wire is going to spatter more and produce a lower quality bond. Gas will be much cleaner and stronger. If you're going to do bodywork, then you're going to need gas - not flux. If your just going to be welding metal that you really don't care how strong ... or how it looks.... or if you're going to be welding outside in the wind, then go flux.

Lou.. Flux core is Great. for welding light gauge tubeing making brackets and building you frist project.. A welding cart out of angle iron,, But... for sheet metal welding .. get your self the optional gas regulator & gas bottle for you Lincoln Weld PAC...You can weld alott of metal B-4 you run out of gas..it's not like useing a Oxy/Acetylene out fit..

Go to the local welding shop. Buy one package deal with tank, wire, gloves, helmet, tips, ect.
That will make your life so much easier. The places that sell and service are cheaper in the long run.

I've got a Lincoln Electric MIG, pretty basic model that can also use gas if need be. I got mine for a similar price but don't know if it's the same model. I've only used the flux core wire right now. All my welding is outside and usually on things I don't care about as far as looks (rear-end cart, engine test stand, exhaust). I have found it VERY handy and it tackles my jobs. If I ever needed to do body work I would definitely use the gas. It's perfect for all my stuff. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Lincoln makes a mig pak wire feed welder for lighter gauge steel up to 1/8 in. thick with the regulator and everything but the gas cylinder for $299 at home depot. $289 in the sears catalog. I Just bought a full cylinder for a $100 at a local gas supplier they didn't have the 55 cf cyl so they gave me the next size up 100 cf? for the same price I was told to set the reg at 20 cfh so you should get about 2.5 hours of actual welding time from a bottle. Me and a friend is basically just learning to weld with the mig but after a couple of hours we already welded in 2 patch panels in my 72 front fenders It just takes a little practice. we probably have about twice as much weld on the but joints but they are getting cleaner! Gotta love those grinders. Jim

How big are the tanks and how much does it cost to refil them?

I have the WeldPAK100...Used it with the flux core wire..which is ok for brackets and things like that.Lots of spatter. But I bought the MIG conversion and it's night and day. Much cleaner welds and more tuneable.Sheet metal is a breeze. The tank I have is around 18" tall or so. Wanna say it's around $15 to fill. But don't quote me on that.
