Hi there! This is my first post.
I'm restoring a '72 Heavy Chevy. It has the '70 optional 3-spoke black Cushion Grip steering wheel. After restoring the upper portion of the (standard style) steering column I installed a new horn contact onto the steering wheel (mounted with 3 screws into the steering wheel itself) and new center horn cap. However, now there is no "give" or flexibility to push the center horn cap in order to activate the horn - the entire assembly is rock solid. The horn contact has circumferential protruding metal "tabs" to hold the center cap on with (the center cap has a matching solid metal ring on its backside to mate with the protruding ring of tabs on the horn contact).
My understanding is that the "flexibility" to push the horn assembly, in order to activate the horn, is built into the horn contact assembly itself.

What am I doing wrong? Is the new horn contact itself faulty-not enough give or flexibility? Am I installing the center cap onto the horn contact incorrectly?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Did you install the contact that goes thru the wheel and into the cancelling cam? There is a plastic ring with 3 bosses that holds the metal cup that holds the horn button-- it should have a thin metal disc under it that moves when you press the horn button. This disc makes contact with the hub of the steering wheel. This is what energizes the horn relay. I think that the Year One catalog has an illustration of these pieces.

The horn contact for this style optional wheel is basically the same as for the 3-spoke wood wheels. I did install the spring, eyelet, and insulator into the cancel cam. There is a metal tang on the back of the horn contact that pushes against this spring when the horn contact is screwed to the steering wheel.
I looked at Year One's website and believe that the parts you are mentioning are PN#s 9046N, RU609, and RU1327. PN 9046N is for '64-'70, but excludes woodgrain or cushion grip steering wheels. Same for RU609; and RU1237 is for '65-'67.
The horn cap/horn contact assembly did function properly (i.e.- one was able to push it to activate the horn) before I took the steering column apart and I believe that I assembled it back in exactly the same fashion as it was originally. But something is amiss.
I appreciate your input.
