Derek69SS Feb 17th, 06, 12:04 AM If tearing the car apart is progress, I guess I'm moving forward...

The body needs to be on the other chassis, running, driving, and capable of doing a smokey burnout by my wedding on May 20th... and all the bugs worked out so we can drive it to Nashville for Chevell-abration for the honeymoon. http://www.lateral-g.net/forums/images/smilies/willy_nilly.gif

Derek69SS Feb 18th, 06, 11:43 AM Any problems so far??Not enough time or money! :D
It's been going good so-far, but all 8 body-mount bolts are spinning the nuts  so I'll have to do some cutting to get it lifted off. I'm hoping to get the body propped up off the frame tomorrow after the Daytona 500 so I can get to work cleaning up the floor-pans for a thin coat of rhino-liner (good for durability and sound-deadening)
ky70elky Feb 18th, 06, 12:04 PM Before you do the rhino lining, better do some measuring at the trans tailshaft. Where yours was a caprice it may be smaller, but my was all over the floorboard in mock up.
May be uniquie to my car, but hate to see you have to cut after the coating.
Looks great, whish mine was moving a little faster.

Looking great. Not to worry. Things always compress into the time allowed. If you had a year, it would take a year! You'll get it done. May be a few sleepless nights, though.
Wish mine was in paint. What color blue is that?
Andy
Derek69SS Feb 18th, 06, 2:22 PM The color is '95 Corvette "Dark Cloissonne". It looks different in every type of light. In direct sun, it's a very bright blue, on a cloudy day it looks dark blue, and at night under street-lights it looks purple.
Thanks for the compliments
69Chvelle Feb 18th, 06, 3:19 PM Looks good man! Good luck getting it finished! Sounds like a great honeymoon to me. Wish mine was that far along, I'm still trying to find a donor car(LS1/T56).
erikbuzz Feb 23rd, 06, 1:10 AM LS1/T56... aren't we all... :)
Livn-lg Feb 23rd, 06, 1:53 AM How bout these???

JWagner Feb 25th, 06, 6:44 PM Rather than actually work on my car, I found it easier to just surf and look for the posts of those that actually do this kind of stuff. At El Camino Central site there is an active forum for LT1 conversions that may be of interest.

Hope that this helps a bit. Maybe I should go to the garage now?

Another update - The engine & trans came out last-night. The body should be off the old frame tomorrow, then I'll spend 2 weeks POR-15'ing the floors, and coating them with "Lizard-Skin" before it gets dropped onto the new frame :)
LS_5 Feb 25th, 06, 10:11 PM Hi Derek
Have you done much research on Lizard Skin? We're going to use a Dynamat product that's pre-cut for the floors and firewall called Acousti-Shield, but we've been kicking around using Lizard skin in the doors and quarter glass areas to help shelter the interior from exhaust sounds/resonance.
I'm a little conerned that, should you inadvertantly wind up with a hole in the Lizard skin coating somehow, that moisture could get in, get trapped and eventually start a cancer on the sheet metal that you can't get at to fix. Kind of like the old argument about not undercoating a car when it was new.
Potentially did more harm than good.
What do you think?
Andy
Derek69SS Feb 25th, 06, 10:17 PM I'm going to POR-15 the floors first, so even if moisture does get under the Lizard-Skin, it will have another layer of protection. My floors aren't pretty, (actually quite ugly) and the POR-15 is just my way of getting out of putting the effort into cleaning off all the rust, since the Lizard Skin needs to be applied to a clean rust-free surface.
I'll give some feedback on the application of it when I get done, and again when I can road-test it to see how well it works.
Mr.McFast Feb 28th, 06, 12:04 AM same color as my 69.....pics are at the bottem of the page.....

Derek69SS Mar 1st, 06, 10:29 AM No pics, but a worthy update...
The engine came out last Friday night - that was a breeze with no front clip... came out in about an hour, which was a nice change from the last 3 engines I've yanked (2 305s from early 90s caprices, and the LT1 from a '95 caprice)
Last night, I lifted the body off the frame. I used a 10' piece of 2x3 rectangle tubing and drilled some holes to bolt the chains onto it to keep them from moving. The tube goes through the side windows of the car, and has chains bolted to the seat-belt mounts, and a cherry picker on each side of the car for lifting. I was able to get it balanced, and actually lifted it off without anyone else around to help. I made 6 12" stilts that bolt to the body-mounts, so I could set it down on the old frame, but have room to work on cleaning up the floors.
I've got some welding to do... some the body-mount locations are pretty damn rusty. I'm hoping to have it on the new frame in 2-3 weeks with the floors all cleaned up, body-mount and floor-braces repaired, the whole floor POR-15'd and then coated with "Lizard-Skin". Then I can start on the re-assembly.
chef Jul 30th, 08, 1:50 AM awsome post!!!
