: RANT about Unlimited Fiberglass!

I got my Unlimited Fiberglass fenders the other day and they stink!

Anybody considering getting anything from the company should watch out. When I picked them up, I was considering telling them to shove it. I decided to live with them.

They require massive work to look straight. Their catalog says that, "They attach to stock locations."...BS! The 'tabs' that they have are a solid inch from the mounting location, forcing me to use screws or somesuch to attach them. Their 'installation kit' (that they charge $15 for) is nothing more than tab extensions and 10 pop rivits (more BS)...like I'm going to POP RIVIT my fenders on!

If I'd known about this site earlier, I wouldn't have had this problem.

Thanks for the ear...Rant mode off. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Bummer that you didn't get what you expected. Unlimited Fiberglass hoods have been discussed quite frequently in the Bench Racing section and I haven't found anyone yet that is satisfied with the quality of their products, any of it. They might, and that's a big might, be good enough for a race car where fit and finish isn't a prime concern but for a street car...

Sure it isn't too late to send them back?

I've been to their production facility..a friend was looking for a fibreglass hood for his nova...We left empty handed and not planning to return any time soon.

They do take refunds...but they charge a 25% 'restocking fee'

That's $75 lost out of my $300...I think I'll just figure out how to use them (sans pop rivots)

Give me poor fitting metal panels anytime, but you can make those junkers fit well.

Take your time and grind off or build up what you need and you can make them fit perfect, I have did it a number of times. I havn't used this particular brand, but some pretty bad parts none the less.

Start by making the mounts fit right. Remember if you make them a little too low, you can always shim them out like the metal parts were. But if you take fiberglass mat and lay it on the mounting tabs (with the tabs gelcoat ground off of course) you can grind them to shape and drill new holes in a flash. Get some 2" wide masking tape to stick on as a backing for the mat. Don't worry about getting it too close, you will be surprised at how much you can modify them with the grinder. Then after they mount halfway decent, take to makeing them fit the outside surfaces. Grind edges, or what ever to make them fit. If you go too deep and hit porous glass, just fill it with Evercoats "Kitty hair" or "Vette panel adhesive".

Here is a little trick I learned from an old Corvette guy. When you are close, grind the edges and the top of the panels as much as you need away from the gap to fill with those same products and make the panel "flow" to the next nice. Stick a piece of cardboard in between the panels in the gap. Spread the filler up to the cardboard on both sides and feather the spread out nice. After the filler has cured, break out the cardboard and sand the panels flat then dress up the gap, PERFECT fit. Don't get weird on me guys, the parts ARE MADE out of polyester resins, so what if you spread filler all over it!

I made my '64 Vette FLAWLESS doing it this way. It was a heck of a lot better than the factory did I can tell you that! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif
