I am interested also. I have tried to locate a pump that was used by GM back in the 80's to assist some of the J-body and like cars (86 Celebrity) with no luck. All gone from the wrecking yards around here. I have heard the aftermarket ones sold by MP Brakes and Summit work ok but make a lot of noise if not mounted properly.

We use one from a turbo Volvo in our road racer, along with the associated reservoir. 15-20" in the reservoir at all times, even before you start the car. I get these at the local boneyard, along with the mounts and isolation valves.

Turbo Volvo.... Can you give me more info??? Application... Year, Make, Model !!! Also how big is the pump you have...what are the measurements?? Do you know the part number ??? Summit Part# CLP-12VVCP (AKA: Classic Performance Products Part# 12VVC) is: 8" High.... 12" Long... 6" Wide... That seems too big to mount where you won't be able to see it !!! A smaller version of that pump would work great but... Where and what can I get one from ???

I have one mounted to the firewall under the drivers side front fender, you can here it but it works great. The brakes stop like nothing I have ever driven. You can get it from Stainless Steel Brake Corp @ www.ssbrakes.com. I experienced a problem with the brake booster being able to hold the vacumn so we had to go to a double diapham. The double diapham is surpose to work with any cam and low vacumn. It cam from True Connections @ www.true-connections.com

I used one on my car for about a 1.5 years(3000 miles). It is a GM piece. The one the aftermarket brakecompanys used to sell.

My motor only made 5" vacume at idle with a .700 lift roller. If you have a big lumpy cam, you cannot hear it when the car is running. It sounds like a little air compressor. Works awesome, I had it mounted on the firewall inside the drivers fender. It was completely hidden.

I stopped by a repair shop that specializes in volvo's. The guy is even Swedish for cryin' out loud. I asked him about any brake vacuum pumps and for what years turbo cars they were on and he looked at me like I ws speaking greek. He says the only pump was gear driven back in the day and now there is one used with ABS systems but he has not had to fix one yet so he knows nothing about any pump that I could adapt.

What year, and model did you get that pump from onovankind67????

onovakind67
Feb 18th, 06, 9:04 AM
I don't remember the exact year and model, probably a mid-80's as they were old enough to be in the junkyard. The pump is located on the driver's side inner fender with a 3/8" hose connected to it. We also use a Volvo vacuum reservoir that fits nicely inside the dash of our Nova.
We had previously used the vacuum pump from an Audi, the one that controls the door locks, but it wasn't heavy enough to last.
You also find vacuum pumps in certain GM cars from 82-85. These are roughly the same size as the Volvo pump but the GM ones I found were pretty dirty. They are under the driver's side fender in these cars:

I have a 48 chev streetrod w/power disc brake. My problem is hard peddle.I have a 7" booster 1" bore MC new proportionig valve.I carry 15" vac at idle up 20" at 2000 rpm still hard peddle.I have done some research on elec pumps, they are available at Stanard Motor Products,Part# VCP-103 for $199.99,but is this the solution???????? Hate to spend more money on this with out knowing.Maybe I should drop down to a 7/8" bore MC????Theses pumps came on 80's mid size GM,they should still be in the yards.

Here is a link to SSB's

http://www.stainlesssteelbrakes.com/products/detail/3438/?make=Street%20Rod%20Accessories&model=Electric+Vacuum+Pump+Kits&year=

I have a gm model with built in sesor as to when the vacuum drops. I have it mounted in the front fenderwell, drivers side. I have it inline with a vacuum cannister with guage which is on the firewall under the driver's fender, which is then tied to the booster. This may be overkill, but the pump will not have to come on so much. I used 3/8" hard tubing for the runs, with rubber to connect. I used rubber at first, but they collapsed. You can not hear the pump run when the motor is running.

First of all, the dimensionsa ae posted IN the link right under the price, secondly, the pumps can be found new in parts stores (they will have to order them) thirdly, you can't complain about not getting fair deals because you aren't supposed to be making deals in these posts anyways. Ever think about posting a WTB ad?

WILD72
Feb 20th, 06, 10:22 AM
Thanks for the reality check.... I am well aware of those factors... The link has incorrect measurements because I called the manufacture and that unit from end to vacuum tubes end measures 12" in length...in the link it states ("approximate"). I have called around and part stores can't get what im looking for. What Im looking for is the GM similar unit with the built in pressure switch "the old style". The new designs that are available new is not what I want !!!

Wild, I am currently using the exact pump your referring to. I found it on ebay as all the other sources were out/no longer available. I tried NAPA, Orielly's, AutoZone, Carquest, RockAuto and a few other and NONE could get the pumps anymore. The guy if I remember correctly was out of Florida. If I find the info or link I'll add it to the post later. BTW I had a bracket fabed so it mounts under the master cylinder but am thinking about putting it on the inner fender as it does cause you to feel a vibration in the brake pedal when it kicks on. I looked back through my old emails and here's the email address I have for the guy I got my pump from hawk_ii_mail@yahoo.com (hawk_ii_mail@yahoo.com) nevermind I emailed him and he says he doesn't have any at the present time, here's a few ebay auction numbers 8039468379, 8040385227 and 8038305641(this guy says he can get things additional parts and he seems to have a few VCP pumps listed) hope this helps. Pete

no 1 dc... Thanks for helping !!! I checked out the auctions and the 1st one is good but lacks the pressure switch... The 2nd one is the same kind of pump that rainbechtold posted a link to that measures 12" in length when you measure up to the tubes. The last one I E-mailed the guy and I am waiting for his reply... How does the one you have work for you ??? Are you happy with it ??? Have you had any problems ??? Did it correct brake problems for you ??? Team member "scotty" ended up having the right one !!! but he sold it..... I was a day late... 69bigblock has one but it lacks the pressure switch too & I can't find a pressure switch that would work the pump so......I dont know.....

UPDATE: Guy E-mailed me back and said he does not have one... I just have to keep looking....

Wild, mine works perfectly and solved my low vacuum problem. It's an original GM one that has the pressure switch built in. Run an ad in your local paper looking for and 80's celebrity, sunbird, etc... and you might be surprised what is sitting in someones 'backyard". Pete

TC.... I did use the numbers off the E-Mail... I gave them the reference number (UNP5859571). Then they told me that that number is old and does not pull anything up... they then ask me "Whats The Application?"... So I then rattled off the Interchange number. The interchange 372-00108 number would pull that pump up on their computer system.... If you call and give them that number they tell you $140.00....

See this site for more info:
http://www.gmcmotorhome.com/tech/vacuum_pump/index.html

All the pumps listed in the page linked above all have a nice rubber isolated mounting bracket and an integral vacuum switch and keep avbout 18" of vacuum for your brakes.

I did not have any trouble finding two in the junk yard when I went looking. You should look around for a better yard in your area. It's a lot of fun to spend a Saturday morning walking through a Pick-a-Part yard or some other local auto recycler yard.
