I was told by somebody that an HEI will not work too good after 6,000 rpm. Now this is from a local machine shop and I was a little disappointed because I really wanted to use an hei on my 402. Is there any truth to this? I figured that HEIs must work pretty well if GM is using them on their 454,502,572 and other crate motors.
Thanks in advance for any info,
Tony

My understanding is the older modules would poop out at higher rpm. I don't about GM modules but most, maybe all, aftermarket ones are good for more but I don't know how much. You might ask this in the performance forum and maybe get some good answers from those that have used them.

MSD has just come out with a cheaper line of billet HEI's, ready to run for like $150.00. Looks like its a stand alone unit, with coil and all. I would go w/that for sure.

I tried one in a brand new 454 in my old shop truck. I couldn't get the truck
to start, no fire in the hole. Swapped it for the beat out 20 year old unit
sitting on a shelf in my garage, and fired right up. Might have been a bad
module, who knows? I guess you get a bad part from anyone sometimes so
I won't be real harsh, but I haven't tried another.

I noticed that the new $150 MSD HEI that you are talking about looks identical to the pro comp HEI, do you think that pro comp is making it for MSD?

Not sure...but I would think that MSD put their name on it, its probably a pretty good unit regardless of who made it. Actually, the distributor kinda looks alot like the 350.00 billet Hei I had.
