Okay heres the deal. I have been planning to take my 72 chevelle 350 engine to a shop to get work dont on my engine. I the reason I havent gone yet is I havent been saving up money for this so I kinda want to wait till I at least get around $400 or so saved up for this.
Can any of you guys give an estimate of what you think this will cost me to do. (I would like to do it myself, but so busy with my job).
I am so anxious to get this done by summertime.
anyways, I would like to get headers, high performance intake manifolds, cams, and a new exhaust system(flowmasters). I would like to get more power out of my engine and if there are anything else im missing, I would like that to be added also. You know how much I would need for this to be done at a shop!!? I live in northern california. thanks!

Its disheartening, but if you did it all yourself, 400.00 wont even buy the parts, even on the cheap you can figure 100.00 for cam/lifters,100.00 for intake manifold,100.00 for headers, and 100.00 for mufflers, which doesnt include the rest of the pipes.

Mike,

Well if you are going to embark on a project like this, you need a plan. You need to figure out what you have and where you want to go and how you will get there BEFORE you start throwing money around, otherwise chances are you will be simply throwing a lot of that money away on stuff that doesn't work well together- if at all- and it sounds as though you don't have enough money to throw away in the first place.

Then you need to educate yourself so you are not completely at the mercy of parts salesmen or shops or catalog customer assistance techs. You can go to dozens of good websites to see sample high performance engine build-ups from mild to wild (chevy hi performance is one of my faves) or read Hot Rod or Car Craft or ???? or even do a search on this Chevelle site where intakes, headers, cams, carbs, distributors, and etc. have been discussed a million bazillion times.

FWIW, one of the best horsepower-adding things of all you can do is make sure the junk you have now is TUNED UP PROPERLY. After that, you can begin to worry about becoming the terror of the streets.

The Clencher gave some good advice. I'd add that the nice thing about performance mods is you can start small and do one thing at a time as you get the cash. Plus if you do 50 things to your car and it runs like crap, it's a lot harder to figure out which of the "improvements" is the culprit. If you do one thing at a time, it's easier to get that one thing worked out. Ask me how I know. I'd seriously think about doing the work yourself, starting with something fairly easy like headers and exhaust, then move up to carb and intake before trying to tackle something that involves messing around inside the engine. Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions you think might be stupid. Some folks here might give you crap but most are very helpful.

If you have 400 bucks to start with, I vote for exhaust system first. if you know your going to stay with a small block go with the Summit house brand headers and exhaust kit. headers are like 87 bucks and 2 1/2 exhaust is 187 dollars. you could easily get this installed in a day in your driveway. Save a few more pennies and go buy yourself a intake and carb setup. 140 for the intake and 250 for the carb, while you've got the intake swap going toss in a HEI dist. 120 bucks. Make sure you go with a dual plane and a 600 cfm carb vacuum secondary not a double pumper. then drive it around and enjoy it. Later on go to a cam swap and a converter. but get the motor breathing first.
Now the fun part. Hit the swap meets and flea markets. I don't pay more than 20 bucks for a carb. usually holley 600's intakes seems to go for 50 bucks. I picked up my last one for 20 it was a performer. HEIs are about 25 bucks. I usually find these at regular flea markets. most people don't go to these for car parts, so the ones that do have stuff, usually don't sell much and are more than likely to be happy to get some money. used headers are another story, really cant tell what they came from, and if you ask does it fit a chevelle they will usually say sure. Good luck!
