What do you guys do with all your waste fluids? Oil is easy, but what about:

Antifreeze
Brake fluid
Tranny fluid
Power steering fluid
Gear oil - can it be 'recycled' with engine oil?

I expect your city has a recycling and collection center somewhere. My city has collection tanks at the City Land Fill. You simply drive out there and pour it into their designated tanks. Check around you. You probably have something like that available too.

LOL on a job in Mobile we took our waste oil from the boat to an Instant Oil Change and asked if they would take it. They said sure without knowing that we had 25 gallons! We quickly unloaded the 5 5-gallon pails and took off before they could notice.

well, all of that stuff is "hazardous waste" and it is unlawful to dispose of it by just dumping it in the trash or down the drain or on the ground, as you know. I think most cities/counties, etc. have some place to handle these materials, since they generate a lot of them too. Like the county motor pool for instance.

Two examples I know of include

Pierce county (Tacoma, WA). You can take hazardous there for disposal anytime they are open which is 7 days a week.

Fresno County, Calif. Twice a year they have hazardous disposal day for residents, and you can take your stuff to the designated place.

Your city/county probably has a website that has information about this, or start calling around to the waste disposal or public works department or even contact your elected representative at county/city hall.

My county has a haz mat drop off location set up twice a year, at a local college. They will take any and all automotive type stuff. Even things I dind't know were classified as hazardous. (like dead flourescent bulbs...they have mercury in them) Its set up nice, just drive in, and pop the trunk, and a couple friendly dudes in full hazmat gear will take out your bad stuff for you. They don't want you to get out of the car....

I'd check and see if your county has somehting similar.

I have a waste oil heater (a wonderful invention!) for oil and everything else goes into marked jugs and delivered to the Haz Mat collection site.

Antifreeze is a great weed killer.

I just usually put it in a container, such as laundrary detergent, and mark it. Take it and drop it off at my local Pep Boys. They take old oil, and no body usually questions anybody dropping off any liquid. What they do? Don't know. But its outta my hands.

I know a guy in town that has the waste oil burner. He will take any "oil" type fluid like motor oil, tranny fluid, p/s fluid, even cooking oil from my turkey fryer. Anti freeze and brake fluid would have to go to haz mat around here.

Around here, it's legal to dispose of your oil in the trash, as long as it's fully absorbed into rags, paper towels, etc. You can buy "oil change" boxes at the store, basically a cardboard box with a plastic bag filled with shredded rags, paper, paper towels, etc. They'll absorb 5 quarts. Tie it up, toss it in the trash. You can dispose of paint the same way, or by pouring it out a bit at a time onto a piece of cardboard and letting it dry. Once the can's empty, and the paint is dry, everything goes into the trash.

They allow this, because the city burns most of the residential trash for power generation, which for some reason usually costs more than fossil fuels around here.

Here, I take my old Walmart oil back to them..

Been doing it for years and years!!

I think antifreeze cab be flushed down the toilet but they might have changed the Reg's on me??

Paint, let it dry hard in the can and the garbage guys will take it.

AND as a matter of fact, if you cut a tire either down it's center in two like a bagel, or into three pie shaped chunks, they have to take them too. Otherwise you have to dispose of them whole through a tire guy or tire store

BUT cutting a tire can be a real PAIN!!

walmart will take it. they already charge a nickle a quart disposal when you buy from them. it's closer for me to take to an oil change shop. i just drop off my full clothes detergent jugs at their door when they are closed. LOL.
