: Snow Plow Installation?

Anyone ever installed a Western snow plow mount and wiring on a pick-up? The truck has never had a plow before. Is it worth paying to have it done by someone who's had experience, or is it just time consuming? Heard it takes about 8 man hours.

Trying to decide if its worth $650 to have someone else do it.

Thanks.

I've installed them before its not that hard. you may need a big drill and some patience but otherwise its not that dificult. On a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 7

I watched an episode of "Trucks" where they installed one. Of course it took less than half and hour since that's how long the show is. He admitted that
it took 3 hours though, and had two other people helping.

They are not that bad at all. I wouldnt pay that much to have it put on. I helped my bro-in law take one off a truck about a month ago and with air tools it took us about an hour. It took that long because we didnt want to torch stuff off and cut any wires so it could be put back on easier. I am guessing if you have good drill bits and a volt meter 2-3 hours going back on would be a safe guess. I have had my meyers plow on 3 different trucks and always done it myself. You will do fine if you are mechanicly inclined at all.

Hey, Thanks guys!

That's what I thought. I'm sure the extra guy(s) are as much for wrestling things around as it is for technical help.

We put one on the 78 GMC, took about half a Saturday to do. Speaking of plows, does anyone have a picture of one mounted on an 04 Silverado? I was thinking about putting one on mine.

sorry Tom, we at my work just demounted our plow today, so no pics. We have an 05 GMC though.

Hi Tom

Thanks for the response. Mine's an '03 Silverado. Same set-up as the '04, I think.

I understand you have to cut the plastic valance under the front bumper to expose the frame rails. I've seen a couple on the road with the cetner 2-3 feet taken out, about 6-8" high.

Kinda screws up the appearance in the summer, but life is full of choices, I guess. I'm still struggling with it, myself.

Is the plastic valance hard to remove and replace? If not maybe remove it completely when plow equipt is on, or get one from a recycle yard to cut. Or cut the one on there and replace with a new or recycled one in summer.

Thanks, Von Good idea!

It should come off pretty easy. It's held on by cheapa$$ plastic fasteners that are barely bigger than the holes in the bumper and valance. About a year after I bought the truck, both ends of the valance were loose. I bought some new factory fasteners again, but they didn't work, so I just used black wire ties. Hasn't budged since. The other fasteners should pop right out.

The only problem could be that the truck mount brackets may stick out past the valance, so you may have to take the truck mount off completely every year -- which could be kind of a pain, but it's worth checking out!

Thanks!
