Is it possible to run standard type axles with ford ends? Or do I have to buy new axles that accept ford bearings?

The Ford axle bearings will not work on the stock 12 bolt axles. You have to get the axles made for the Ford bearings. Don't use Ford ends. Moser makes housing ends for the Ford bearings that accept the Chevy brakes.

BGH, have you used any of the Moser ends you speak of? I'm just wondering if they're a butt welded end like the Alston ones I used, or if they would slip over the tube a bit like the stock ones.

I have used several sets of the Moser ends. They are a but weld, but they have a bevel on them for better weld penetration. I think Moser has the best housing ends because you can still use a Ford axle seal in them. Most of the others rely on an o ring on the bearing, and these leak a lot. The Ford axle seal works very well.

Okay, thanks for the info. FWIW, the Alston ends I used, 3/8" Torino big bearing style, also take the Ford seal.

Ok thanks what axles do you recomend(brand). The car is more like a daily driver than a racer.

I have a J&S Gear Co. ( Huntington Beach, California)12 bolt in my Chevelle. What J&S does is take a standard 12 bolt housing and cut off the ends. Then he welds on F**D style ends such that you now have "bearing retained" axles instead of "C" clip retained axles. He then installs massive 31 ( I think that this is correct to the best of my recollection) spline axles. The assembly is brutally strong when he finishes it. I have had it in the car for close to 2 years now and it has never missed a beat.

FWIW I have a 1972 Chevelle 4dr with a 383 SB pushing 10" rear tires so the axle assy gets an occasional work out.

On a humorous note the axles have a sticker on the outer ends that is the company's logo that manufactures the axles. It shows a foot kicking an a**. Of course the company name is Kick A** Axles. :) I had a good belly laugh the first time I saw that. In all respects the new modified axle assembly is a bolt in swap. I am very happy with it.

Those are from Tom's Differentials in California. The larger axles in the 12 bolt will be 33 splines. Stock is 30.
