: hood pins and lanyards...who uses them?
70_FathomBlueMalibu May 10th, 03, 3:41 PM I bought a Goodmark factory cowl induction hood, with the provision for the flapper in the back. The hood also came with the provision for the hood pins. This is for my 70, btw.
I've always liked the thought of using the pins and lanyards if it looked factory. (I've seen waaaaaay to many cars and TRUCKS that had them. Owner installed...yuck. graemlins/sad.gif )
Now I'm starting to look around and I don't see many Chevelles with the pins and lanyards. Am I going to look like a reject from the late 70's and early '80s by going this route? How many 70 models came with this setup? Did you have to order something else to get it? Thanks!

in 70 the cars that came with cowl induction (with the flapper) came with hood pins i love the way they look i have them on my 70
gigem May 10th, 03, 4:38 PM My 72 SS had 'em from the factory. Last owner filled the holes, I am putting them back, just like the General wanted...
72SS454Chevelle May 10th, 03, 10:15 PM 70 was an option for the SS and included with cowl induction. 71 I am little foggy and do not remember which way. 72 every SS came with them standard.
RC 70 May 10th, 03, 10:59 PM I got um.
NITRO May 12th, 03, 9:22 AM Got em and love em on my 70! Car looks like its going warp speed, standing still, covered, in the garage. :D
EddieF May 12th, 03, 10:44 AM I had a '72 Heavy Chevy that had the hood pins from the factory. That hood was a non-functional cowl-style hood. I thought they looked great.

(P.S. -- Nice car, Gigem)

riskyvt May 12th, 03, 11:02 AM Got 'em on my '72 SS. Instead of using the plastic clip to retain the under-hood end of the cables, I fastened them to an un-used hole on the radiator support.
J70Chev May 12th, 03, 5:19 PM a 70 without the cables would look just downright improper. Gotta use 'em, also research where to spit the cables thru the front end, some do it over the grill, some thru the grill. I can't remember which hole, but I'm pretty sure they come out thru one of the square holes in the grill
jtjohnston May 12th, 03, 8:40 PM P.S., they can be very functional. Get yours up to 80-90 mph, on a very windy day will prove my point. My plain jane hood vibrates a lot after 80 mph. Makes no wonder SS cars had them. GM was likely too scared of hoods whipping off in the air at 120 mph, so they added the pins, not just for the look. bThat's my story and am stickin' to it  graemlins/angry.gif graemlins/beers.gif graemlins/hurray.gif graemlins/thumbsup.gif
70_FathomBlueMalibu May 13th, 03, 1:43 AM Thanks for all the feedback guys! I'm itchin to get this thing on. Too bad I've got other things pressing at the moment. But it shouldn't be too long.
Nitro ,do you have any pics of your 70? I would love to see a Fathom Blue 70 with white stripes and the pins and lanyards. Might give me an idea of how mine will look in the future. Thanks!
I concure that the optional Cowl-Inducted '70s came with the pins (not the standard domed hood).
For '71 & '72 all SS and Heavy Chevies were supposed to get them, but I have heard that original early production '71 models without Cowl-Induction may have omitted them.

There was a very early 71 shown on this site a few months ago that did not have the pins, but every other 71 or 72 I've ever seen, (with the SS hood), had them. In 70 it was an option for SS only, and was packaged with the flapper door hood.
Xtreme70SS396 May 13th, 03, 8:01 AM Justin, mine has them also, love 'em!
Tip of the day: twist the cable before sticking the pins in the posts - do it once in the right direction, and the cables will stick in the air and won't hit your paintjob!
SS_Dave May 13th, 03, 11:59 AM Hood pins were one of the "high performance" add ons for lots of muscle cars during the era. They went right along with Cherry bombs, Thrush, Hurst, spring shackles, baby moons etc. It is likely that GM jumped on the band wagon in an effort to make their cars fit the looks at the time. So, if you are restoring exactly and your car had them, put them on. If you have any muscle car of the mid 60's to early 70's, you could put them on and be correct in spirit.
BTW, hood pins are also functional. If you have ever wrapped a hood over the top of the car at 90 mph you will know what I am talking about.

73 BOO May 13th, 03, 1:27 PM I have 'em on my 73 'Bu and love 'em! It definetely adds to the total picture.
NITRO May 13th, 03, 4:12 PM Justin, I just picked up my first digital camera graemlins/hurray.gif and will be downloading the software tonight. I am going on vacation for a week, and will get some pics of the car posted next week. I'll take a close-up of the front end showing the pin installation. You will love it, cause the pins really add to the muscle look of the car. Till next week graemlins/waving.gif

NITRO May 13th, 03, 4:16 PM 73 BOO, do you have any pics of your pin installation in your 73? I am turning my 73 into a restification instead of restoring it, and have a spare set of pins in the garage. Was thinking of putting them on the 73, but want to see some pics first.
Thanks, Jim.
philcritcher May 14th, 03, 11:20 PM My 71 I bought new came original with pins.
My current 71 has them too. They're great. I love them, and they add to the look of the front end.
70_FathomBlueMalibu May 15th, 03, 12:58 AM Thanks for all the comments guys! I hope I didn't offend anyone by the "reject from the late 70's and early 80's" thing.
I just remember vividly at my auto tech school a couple of years ago...a classmate drilling holes in the hood of his early 90's Ford F-150 truck to install a set of pins. He was too cheap to spring for the lanyards. I told him it looked pretty good. Maybe I should just be a bit more honest in a situation like that. But once you drill the holes...there ain't much in the way of going back. Anyway, those are the kinds of things I was talking about.
