This seems like a common posting these days but I will post it again. The gas gauge in my 68 El Camino is not working. I checked the tan wire going to the tank and it has power going to it. So I pulled the dash and checked the gas gauge itself. When I supply the gauge with power from a battery it pegs to FULL. When I remove the power it just sits there. I thought that it would slowly drop to E. Any tips on how I could clean the gauge or possibly find another one?

Try grounding the tan wire and see if the gage goes to empty. A fuel gage may just sit in the same spot after power is removed. It's made so that it doesn't move like a volt gage. Otherwise it would bounce around while you are driving as the gas sloshes around.

Dave,
I too, had a similar problem with my gas gauge. I know the gauge was working with power, but, when I would hook up the terminal connector from the wiring harness, it wouldn't work. I checked all the wiring and I couldn't find a thing wrong anywhere. Come to find out, everytime I would hook up the terminal connector to the gauge, I was missing one of the posts on the gauge. Sounds simple I know, but, sometimes it's the simple things we miss. I hope you find the problem....good luck. :D

John, I grounded the tan wire and it stayed at full. For fun I tried the temp gauge (hooked up to the tan wire) from the same dash cluster and with the tan wire grounded, it bounced like crazy.
