Hello Everyone,
I need to replace the heater core in my '70 SS 396 Chevelle with A/C. I've done this before in a full-size Jimmy and it was easy. However, looking under the dash I only find two screws to remove on the heater housing and the rest look like screws/bolts coming through the firewall from the engine compartment and holding/mounting the air conditioning/heater housing. I've tried looking at the GM Chassis Installation Manual but it's not a lot of help.
Anyone know how to go about this? Do I need to first remove heater/air condition housing off the firewall in the engine compartment or (except for the heater hoses) is this all done under the dash? Any secrets to doing it?
Thanks for the help.

Its been a good while since Ive done it but if memory serves me. You need to remove the housing on the inside. Some of the fasteners go all the way through and sandwich the housings to the firewall. Remove the dash pad-easy to do- to get a better look at the top of the housing.

Mark,
I replaced my core when I removed my Dash! There are 4 studs that go through the fire wall, Two upper and 2 lower. I had to remove my inner fender to get to the lower right one. The lower left one is behind the engine. It may be hard to get to with a BB. Both lower studs are directly below the upper studs.

Thanks for the info. Sounded beyond my limited capabilities and time, so had it done professionally through a local restoration shop. It cost a bit, but less than the damage I would've likely done and had to fix afterwards. Thanks again!
