I have a 40 over 454 that I would like to have a little more compression. I was told that I could gain a little by using a copper head gasket instead of the Felpro blues that I have now.
Is this true? I was going to put the heads on today but I will wait and order some copper gaskets if they will help.
I have flattops with 2 valve reliefs and 98cc heads. How much comp could I gain? The pistons are .023 down in the hole.
Thank you for any help.
Josh.

Anybody use these? Do you have to use any extra sealer? Sorry for all the dumb questions. Josh

If they are the same thickness when compressed, there would be no difference. History says don't use copper head gaskets unless you want water leaks.

Thank you for the reply. I did'nt think that they would gain me too meuch compression. Maybe steel would but I don't want to risk having a leak.
I'll just use the blue felpros that I've had a lot of luck with in the past.--Josh

What's wrong with the .020" thick steel shims Mr. gasket sells??
GM sold millions of motors with shims on them...
I have them on my 496 now..

Im running the felpro 1094's which are a steal shim gasket on my daily driver, sprayed a copper sealant on both sides as recomended by someone on this forum and have NO probblems what so ever and its worth it for the compression. The goodwrench quest article compared swapping these gaskets with cork and they picked up almost .3 points if i remember right.

Hey PDQ--How much comp would a steel shim get me? Shoud I chance the reliable sealing of the blues? Both my heads and block have been trued by the way and never been ran since.
I would have had the heads on already but the people at our parts store screwed up 2 weeks in a row. It seems that they should keep a 454 gasket set in stock. This is still America right?--Thank you Josh
