I have come into owning a 69 Chevelle with a 454 Engine.. The engine has 427 HP square port heads ..Crane enigizer Cam,Gold Race roller rockers,Eldebrock tarantula manifold, a 780 cfm Holly Carb,Hypertech HEI Dist,Speed Pro Teflon pistons,Headers, .

cam specs :Part Number: 103062 Grind Number: 284 H12
Engine Identification:
Start Yr. End Yr. Make Cyl Description
1967 Up CHEVROLET 8 FAIR IDLE, MODERATE PERF. USAGE, GOOD MID-RANGE TORQUE AND HP, MILD BRACKET RACING, AUTO TRANS W/2500+ CONVERTER, 3400-3800 CRUISE RPM, 9.5 TO 11.0 COMPRESSION RATIO ADVISED. BASIC RPM 3000-6000
Engine Size Configuration
396-454 C.I. V

OK the ? The car has a AUTO PRO Tach that the redline is set at 6000rpms

The Car seems to wind up before that.. How can I determine the true redline for this engine ? Does 6000 seem right ? Any guess at what it should be ?http://memimage.cardomain.net/member_images/11/web/791000-791999/791497_7_full.jpg

6,000 rpm is a nice safe setting. It all depends on what kind of a bottom end the engine has, and what the cam profile is. You shouldn't wind the engine much past it's peak power figures.

If all the power is done before 6000, there is no use winding it up any further. 6000 is the safe range, especially if you don't know what's in the bottom end. But, if the power falls off at 5500, then there is no reason to go any higher.

Nice engine compartment, BTW :)
