Hi All,
I'm rebuilding the front end on my 69 and have the front control arms off, pressure washed and sanded as best I could. I've read a lot about POR-15 Chassis Coat and my question is this... how would the control arms look if I bushed on POR-15? Will it look decent or look like they were painted with a brush?

Thanks!!

They will look awesome. Brush marks disappear. If the metal is clean sandblasted, use some metal prep first.

Absolutely. Wait until the first coat is just tacky and apply the second coat. Amazing what a durable shine you'll get. Just make sure you have some really good light (not sunlight) when you apply the second coat since it's difficult to see where you already brushed it on.

Also, watch where the ball joints and bushings press in. That stuff is pretty thick and you'll be sanding/grinding off some when you go to press those things in. Another area is the where the shock threads are.

A cheap foam brush will work fine and it will smooth out.

Take your time and they will look great!!

I think it's worth is.

The Chassis Coat? That's the non-UV sensitive stuff and it brushed on horribly for me. It didn't smooth out like regular POR-15 and before it dried it would drip and run. It's especially hard to prevent that on rounded components like tie rods, draglink, and sway bars.

Stick with the regular POR-15, don't get much sunlight on the suspension anyway.

I used the regular POR-15 on mine and painted them with Krylon Semi-flat and they looked great. Be careful not to brush it on too thick so that it runs. It seems really thin when you put it on but that's ok. A couple of thin coats does the trick. What's cool is to see how it is once it drys. I usually use a small dixie cup to hold it during each coat. After I'm done and the residue in the cup is dry you can pop it out. It is like an extremely hard sheet of thin plastic.

I did all 4 control arms on my 66SS and cant complain about the way it went on. The way it looked when I finished. And the way it has held up after a few years. Seems just as good as powder coat so far. I even used the top coat for a little shine. That applied fine but there are a few really small spots where the bubbles stayed when it dried. No way you can see it by just looking at it from underneath.

If you paint over the POR-15 with another brand of paint, make sure you use POR-15's self etching primer on the POR-15.
