I pulled my tach dash apart to see why my ammeter is not working. I pulled the ammeter out. How can I test it?

Use a weak 1.5v AA or AAA battery across the two terminals. A new battery will register 40+ amps charge or discharge depending on which direction the battery is connected. A weaker battery will register less. This only test that the gauge works not how accurate it is. Reverse the leads to test deflection in the other direction.

I just put the meter between the neg. post of the battery and the neg cable. The meter moves when I hit the horn or even open the door. Guess it works.

Anybody have a diagram for a '69 w/an ammeter? My chassis manual only shows dummy guages. However, it does show a vetter diagram w/an ammeter - not sure if its the same or not.

Question for Steve...My stock 70ss amp gauge seems like it works fine, but when the car is off, the needle sits just to the right of 0. I have the guage out right now while i'm painting my dash. Should it sit right on zero, or is it correct right now? Is there a way to adjust the needle?

Should sit at "0". Only way I know to adjust is to remove the pointer and reposition. But I would not recommend it as it is difficult to remove without damage.
