Was there more than one steering wheel offered for a 71 SS?
I have seen two or three variables at shows and cruises and was wondering wich one is correct.

The hard shiney black rim single bar with the "SS" bar is that standard SS wheel. NOT the soft cushion grip one. An NK4 sport wheel was offered and came with the bowtie emblem on all models including the SS. This is the popular Vega GT style 4-spoke wheel. There was NO SS emblem for this wheel during 1971/72. Those black background "SS" emblems that you see are from later period SS Novas. Check the Chevrolet Parts Book from that period. ZK

The book I have lists your wheel as standard with two optional wheels. The NK4 wheel that zookpr mentioned and a NK2 which is described as deluxe vinyl. No SS emblem on either of these two and this is for 71-72 only.

Yes! Yes! Yes! Can't quite tell from the photos because you can't see the rim clearly. If the rim is hard shiney black it's the right one for standard "SS". It's the same wheel as a malibu except for the "SS" trim bar. If the rim is soft and has a grain it's not the standard wheel.

The other wheel I spoke of is the NK4 - it's a 4-spoke with grain and it's is smaller diameter. On a factory installed Chevelle/El Camino application it should have a "bowtie" emblem in the center of the round horn button. EVEN on "SS" cars the bowtie is correct! It is Group 2.820 P/N 340315. Some folks have a black background w/ silver "SS" emblem. This emblem is Group 2.820 P/N 352886 and the application is for '75 Nova "SS". Many folks claim this to be original for '71/72 "SS" - Not true. Back in the day the NK4 wheel was a rarity in a chevelle/elcamino. However, a few years later they were installed on a host of models and were plentiful for cheap. With the availability of the '75 Nova "SS" emblem - a few bucks! I bought one in 1976. From that time on they found their way into the clones. Today it seems to be a perpetuated urban legend that this "SS" emblem came on the 71/72 NK$ wheel. Consult an original owner. ZK

Thanks for the info. I am not trying to build a 100% original car for shows but it is nice to see that the original stuff survived 35 years in some areas .. Now if I only had a LS7 to slap in it :-)
Thanks again
