Hope this isn't out of line for this forum, but a couple of good friends suggested I ask here.

My dad passed away last year and he had a number of sweet cars. One 67 Elky project I bought from my Mom, but the other is a 67 that he completed. It's not a numbers matching car by any means, but a really nice, straight Elky. Motor is a small journal 327 w/ camelhump (461 as I remember but will verify with a PG trans. Originally a 6 cyl. car he had the engine built by a local speed shop and (I swear) it doesn't have 1000 miles on the new engine. I can't find any info on the engine build, but the other 2 small journal engines he had built were all cast crank, forged TRW pistons, and mild cam. This one idles as smooth as stock. Cast iron intake and Q-jet.

The car appraised for $7000 for the estate but the appraiser said he was low-balling things because of the estate taxes. So I really have no idea what the thing may be worth. Hate to sell it but my Mom is hell bent on getting the $'s out of it to help pay the attorneys fees (never die intestate gang, it leaves a real MESS for others to clean up)

Heres a page with some pics. I know well it's a little tough to 'kick the tires' via the internet but any estimates of what this is really 'worth' around the country?

Thanks

If it looks as good in person as it does in the pics, and doesn't have any rust showing in the floors or anyting... I think $7k-$10k wouldn't be out of line...

That being said.. elCaminos are a little harder to sell than other classic cars- so it may take a little while to find just the right guy.

Put it up in the auto trader for $10k, and be ready to take $7k or $8k when people start coming to look- and you hsould be able to get something in between for it.

Thanks Ben. The car is a Arizona car,, not any rust anywhere. I checked the floorpans, wells behind the seat, 1/4's above the rear tire, and the bottom of the front fenders. Anywhere else that the Elky's are prone to the nasty brown cancer? I can't find any 'cut and paste' patch work to repair rust, and no visible visible rot where the undercoating would be bubbled. I'm not ready to say the car is 100% rust free until I know all the little 'secrete' places the Elky's hide rust.

BTW, I am a pretty sorry photographer, the car presents MUCh better than the pics represent. If I were to say there was a flaw, it is WHY he didn't he coordinate the interior when they painted the exterior???????????? He was a little funny that way. If it looks good on the inside, and it looks good on the outside,, he didn't feel it had to match I guess<shrugs> . Underhood could use some attention to detail IMO. It's clean, and very near stock, but,,, well I'm a little picky about underhood details.

There was a decent 6 that sold at the Russo and Steel auction there recently for $27K. A 66 sold for $44K. Prices on El Camino's are going up.

For rust (or rust repair)
Check around the bottom of the rear window.

I live here in Peoria AZ and Work in Phoenix I would be glad to come by and take a look at it, maybe even make a cash offer if I like it.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Can we all now put an end to quoting what prices and entirely different car supposedly sold for at a trumped up BS auction Russo and Steel, and Barrett-Jackson are famous for cars trading back and forth between dealers falsly inflating their price until someone not in the know , with more money than brains falls for it and jumps into the bid.

If you want to base the price of a car on what they are going for, you can not compare to these type of auctions, look at local sales.

A VERY NICE 67 el camino 327 4 sp SS hood nice paint and interior just sold last week on Ebay here in Phoenix for about $8k

The NADA value shows $13,000-$15,000 but that is not realistic, more for insuring purposes. A better idea is to search for 67 ECs on:

http://ww2.collectorcartraderonline.com/

Then look at the ones that are close to the same condition, and how long they have been for sale. It's true that while someone somewhere would probably would love that El Camino it could take a while to find him/her.

There are also classic car dealers that will do consignment, some for a flat fee, some for a percentage, others for a "per month lot rental fee" plus whatever they can get over your price. The advantage is they do the paperwork, show it, etc., and more people specifically interested in classics will be there looking at it. There are a couple of them in this area, their monthly rates are less than a month of newspaper ads. Car shows and swap meets are also good places to sell.

That's a very decent El Camino,Marv. Hope a TC member can find a good home for it.
My condolences for your father's passing.

Thanks gents. I'm getting the feeling I shouldn't just let it escape to the first offer we get near the $7k appraisal ;)

Next on the list is to find forums to get ideas of what kind of interest there may be in some of his other projects. ( a Sterling kit car w/ a Ed Pink built Porche 912 engine, a 1955 Chevy C-10 big back window project with a pickup load of chrome parts and pieces, a 42' Bluewater Coastal Cruiser...)
Then as soon as I get my Nova back together and the shop cleaned up, I can get started putting the other (my) 67 Elky together. I bet Year One and Classis Industries LOVED my Dad. ;)

Appreciate everyones input.

If you ever see someone in the neighborhood put their house up for sale and the real estate agents' relative buys it 2 seconds later - rest assured you just got screwed

point is if you want to get rid of the car fast - 7 K will do that

if you have some time and want to get a better price then put it on ebay with a 15 K reserve - then see what happens - IMO you should remember - dont be pressured to sell if someone puts an offer in front of you - hold out - say no - worst that can happen is you gotta pay ebay and dont sell the car - probably cost you about about $ 50.00

Besides you might decide to keep it yourself

I hope I'm not insulting your car (no intention to) but if you guys think that $15k is a realistic value for that car you, then guys are nuts.

I had a hell of a time trying to sell my last 69 Elcamino this last summer/fall- 396, TH400, 12 bolt, disk brakes, New interior, new front SS sheetmetal, rust free body, but needed a paint job. After 6 months of trying I only got $4500 out of it.... Now admittidly it did need paint- but how bout this... Another friend with another 69 elcamino with brand new show quality black paint and a #'s match all orginial 350 drivetrain only got $7500 out of his and that is after a YEAR of trying to sell it. Finnaly sold in December.

El Caminos simply don't bring the same $$ that Chevelles do. ElCaminos may be advertised with higher prices, but they don't sell for those higher prices- that is unless they are something special/rare, ex: SS big block, or something that has been customized.

Again, I'm not trying to insult your car- it looks very nice- Just trying to put a dose of reality back into this post.
There is a HUGE difference between a $7k-$10k elCamino and a $15k elCamino.

ahsom, with out a doubt, no offense or insult taken. And I tend to agree with you. Possibly on other parts of the country a rust free 67 might bring more. But the appraisal said $7k here in Az, as of the time of my Dad's death early last year. But he did say he had 'some' latitude and would think low with the appraisals to help with the estate taxes. I wasn't sure what it might really be worth.

With the one evil-bay Az Elky Blown70 referenced, I told my Mom if she get's am offer of $8200-$8500, she should grab her pen and sign the title before the offer get's away.

Appreciate all the input. I'm sure I'll be begging insight as I start to put the other 67 (the project I bought from the estate) together. But the wife tells me I have to clear out 'something' before I bring another project in here ;) Hmmm maybe it's the 'wife' that needs to go! ;)

Marv D, You have the right idea ! (and a great additude)
Id say your advice to you mom was very good, now wait and see what happens (if it doesnt sell you may need to lower the price)

People have to look at what actual cars SELL for, in your area. to set your price.

Not what peoples ASKING price is. or auctions with super rare cars and super rich bidders.
Just call someone with a high price, they will be glad to tell you all about their car, because they havent SOLD IT ;)

Right now I know of a 67 camino, here in phx with a 454, 400, 12 bolt posi straight body & Interior with AC (hasnt been driven for a few years so it will need some freshening) They are asking $8K and have had it for sale for over 6 months with no offers :(

I like El Caminos and have owned several, but recognize there is a small market for El Caminos

(and personally I hate powerglides)

See my post above http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118103. I think the car is worth $7500-10,000 like others have said. It is a nice car but with few options, and not a particularly popular color combination you might really struggle to get more than $8000 for it. I agree, put it on Ebay with a $10K reserve and see what happens.

That is my $0.02 worth.:)

Here is one on Ebay similar to yours and is struggling to get bids http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-El-Camino-1967-El-Camino-396-325hp-Numbers-Matching-Big-Block_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ6153QQitemZ461282 4049QQrdZ1

And then there is this one for high dollars which I don't think will sell at the buy it now price http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Our-Speciality-Nicest-EL-Caminos-anywhere_W0QQitemZ4612312316QQcategoryZ6153QQrdZ1Q QcmdZViewItem

I dont think a factory 396 T400 12 bolt is a very good car to compare your 327 powerglide to. not exactly compairing apples to apples

This is a little closer (asking $7K and recieved no bids) I do like your car more than this one, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4612328394&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT
