I'm ready to put the windshield and rear glass back into the '70. What's the correct size (thickness)of butyl tape? I have a roll of 3/8, but I want to make sure that I have the right stuff so that the window chrome will fit correctly. Thanks

I have always used 5/16 butyl tape,I tried 3/8 once and it seemed to cause problems with getting the chrome trim on.It made the winshield sit a bit to high up.

I'm not the expert here, but I've read on this site that the 3/8 was for late model's with thinner glass, and the 5/16 is correct for our classic's. Cal

The thing is if your windshield has been replaced it is likly the newer thinner glass and will require a 3/8" kit.

While on the subject, what are the advantages of using butyl tape over the sealer that comes in a cualking gun type tube.
I had a local glass company install a new windshield in my '68 and they used the caulking gun style sealer. Everything seems to fit together good.
Thanks

How do I know if I have the newer (thinner) glass? I've owned the car since 1985 and its had the same windshield. It's possible that the winshield was replaced prior to that though. Is there a good way to tell if its not the original?
JeffK, I've heard alot of bad things about using the caulking type sealer on the older cars. I do a search and see what you find.
