: Daily Driver Insurance for my '72?

Ok, so I'd like to drive my '72 more than allowed by the my collector car policy, which limits me to taking it for "Sunday drives" and car shows, etc. Would like to be able to use it as a daily driver (should get better mileage than my 454 Suburban and be a lot more fun to drive, too!).

Anyone know if any of the "big" companies (Allstate, State Farm, etc) will write me a full coverage (comp and collision) policy that will allow daily use? If not one of the big companies, what about a smaller one? What if I'm under 25 y/o?

Thanks!

You can insure it like that, the problem is if something happens to the car, you get Blue Book value if it gets totalled. Those companies look at it as a regular car, not a classic or antique. There are plenty of daily driver old cars around here.

Geez, I wonder what blue book they use? If it's NADA, I should be good - they list $25,000 as the average value.

Nope, Kelly Blue Book value. You would probably be lucky to get $2000. Just curious, how did you go about putting in numbers to come up with $25,000?

Go to www.nada.com, click on collector car insurance, then click on muscle cars, chevy and 1972. Punch in SS454. Add for 4 sp and cowl induction. Comes up to $25,280.

Just did a quote on Allstate.com and they quoted $500/year, but that's not going to be agreed value. Guess I need agreed value AND daily driver. Does anyone have policies like this?

Thx,

Scott

Want to drive an old car? You have to insure (collision) yourself. Insurance is a gamble. Probability and statistics. Tough even for the math majors. Good luck.

I have a stated value policy for $35,000.00 on the Chevelle through my normal insurance company the Hartford. It was only a couple of hundred a year more than with the classic car limited use policy.

Terms of the policy? Uninsured driver runs into you, and your car is destroyed and you get $35,000? Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

That is exactly what happens. Fully insured for total value of 35K.

Not sure about you guys but my 1971 Chevelle is my daily driver for 7 months of the year and my insurance company goes by how much I got it apraised at. So as long as you can find an apraiser that can apraise your car at a value you're satisfied with then you're set. Maybe its different with your companies but it doesnt hurt to look into it. Especially with these olds cars. One chevelle could be worth 1/10th of another due to various things you guys are well aware of.

If you don't mind me asking, how much is your collision damage/loss premium for this coverage per six months, or a full year? I will have to talk to my insurance company about this kind of coverage. Seems to me that it didn't used to be available, but I'm often mistaken.

I have coverage by Nationwide on my '70 El Camino daily driver. Just had to get an appraisal and they provided agreed-value full coverage.
