I have a set of fenders for my 67 chevelle that have old primer that is flaking off. Im repainting the car and im going to chemically strip the fenders. What do i need to ensure a quality paint job after they have been stripped? Such as sanding rust? Applying a cleaner to remove paint stripper chemical? Can i prime the bare metal or do i need to use a self ethcing primer? Any help is appreciated...any questions just ask. Thank you

One of the best ways to clean up after the stripper is to use a roloc wheel. This will help clean up any little imperfections left. BASF makes a direct to metal primer, it is also a surfacer (DP26 / DH55 Hardener) This works good, and sands really easy. Hope this helps.

Be sure to do a water wash and sanding after the chemical stripper or your primer adhesion may suffer. A sctochbrite pad and water hose will remove all of the stripper residue. Bob

After washing the fenders with water, do i just let them dry and then primer? Seems like the water would cause the bare metal to begin to rust. Maybe a light sanding before applying the primer?

As Bob mentioned a sanding after the washing will improve primer adhesion. Without a sanding even thou the metal is bare it wont have the needed tooth for the primer to bite too.
A good sanding after the part is dry is needed. Something like 180 or 220 would be a good grit for either an etch or epoxy primer to bite too. Once you have your fender etched or epoxied then apply your primer surfacer...Eric
