I just received my new SS Cowl Hood from Goodmark for my 70 Chevelle. I also ordered brand new hinges for it. Now, is there a proper way to install the springs on the hinges? Also, should I lubricate the hinges with some white grease or something in order for them to open and close properly? Any suggestions or hints on these questions and for hood installation welcome, thanks.

Riz,

If you have a "Chassis service manual" look in the section titled "Chassis sheet metal". Go all the way to the end of the section and look under special tools. Ref for 1969 special tool #J-9559. This is a very easy tool to make since you won't find one any where. Unless you get lucky. Check with some old body shops. I made mine out of a couple of pieces of exhaust tubing. Had to cut out some half circles and weld them in. The long bolt and nut were avail at the local hardware store. I made my tool 7 1/2 inches long and used 2 1/8" tubing.

Good luck

I fought with those springs for years until someone showed me a neat trick.

Get a chain about 2 or three feet long with a small hook on the end. Hook the spring on the rear spot on the hinge. Then take your chain hook and hook it on the other end of the spring. You now can wrap the chain around your hand and pull the spring up on to the hinge with ease. It is amazingly easy to do.

This is done with the hinge mounted on the car of course.

Sounds like a quick fix. And also sound easy.
