If you are looking for better performance out of the car then a gear change and differential swap would be a good place to start. It isn't something that has to be done.

That is totally subjective, based on how you plan to drive the car.
I have a healthy SB400 in my 70 conv, 4sp and 3.07 posi. PERFECT combo for street, cruisin' and the interstate. The ONLY time it hits the strip is once a year at Chevellabration. Competitive?? Heck no!! But I pace it through the gears and never back off 'til I hit the lights!
If fuel ecomomy is important, a 3.07(12bolt)-3.08(10bolt) or a 3.31 is an excellent choice. If off the line and in-town ONLY driving is what you will be doing, then a 3.73 would probably be more to your liking. I had to make this choice, and after lots of deliberation (driving style, gas prices, etc), I finally decided on a gear more suitable for fuel economy and the hiway.
If you do ANY significant hiway, or long distance driving, trust me, something like a 4.10, and even maybe a 3.73, will get old in a hurry! ESPECIALLY if you use premium gas!
