What is the asphaltic type materials that is stuck on the floor panels called and where could I get it? Also on the front floors I have some rust and a couple of minor holes that aren't under this stuff and I'm wondering if I should pull it up and see what kinda damage is underneath, but I'm afraid i may cause more damage.Should I leave it alone for now? I'm looking for a quick fix until I can tear the car completely down.I was going to clean up the spots and either use por 15 or Eastwoods rust encapsulator but what about the holes can I just cover with the material that I'm asking about, the car won't be seeing any wet roads. This is only temporary.

It is a sound deadening stuff. Ground up a and other parts places sell it. I would remove some of it and see what it is like under it. It is a pain to remove it I know I removed mine.

Will any rust or rot pull up with the deadener and potetially cause more damage, and if I do remove it will the new deadener stick properly when applied if it's a questionable surface. like i said I'm not looking to do any metal work right now, just a quick fix.:(

The way I see it... No good can come from pulling it up at this point, as you already Know you are not ready to fix anything.. personally, I would just put some new carpet in that ole girl and be done.. then when you are ready to do it right.. do it. This car is going to be babied, not going to be driven in rain or see water.. any damage there now will likley not get any worse IMO. If you are just curious??? then get under the car and start tapping and feeling the florr for soft spots.. should be able to tell if the floor under the deadener is weak or rusted.
You may, when you are finally pull that stuff up.. Find a BUILD SHEET!

Thanks Mike,
that sounds like good advice, I'll put some rust encapsulator in the exposed spots and cover the couple of minor holes with more deadener and be done with it for now.As much as I'd like to clean up under there I just can't help but think I won't like what I find and probably cause more harm than good.

POR has an inexpensive 2 part epoxy thats meant for fixing rust pinholes like you have.I haven't used it but I remember reading that some people repaired their window channels with the stuff and it held up.

Did you already find one of your build sheets? If not, this might be a good time to look for one. How many people out there have found build sheets under this material? Perhaps a poll is in order...

No build sheet yet, I asked the guy who did the seats and headliner, he said he found nothing. I pulled out the carpet for the first time and not there either. I read on a post here at TC that a lot of KC cars have never produced copies of buildsheets so I'm not holding my breath.
With the documentation I already have, dealer order form, sales receipt, original window sticker,POP,cars original title and registrations from 65-82, if I don't find a buildsheet it won't bother me, but it would be nice to add to my file, I'm just not ready to tear the floors out yet and I'm afraid if I pull up the deadener in those bad spots I may cause more damage than I'm ready to repair
