: Treating welds short them until body filler???

The welder who is helping me put qtr skins on my 69 keeps doing a disappearing act on me.

He will help a day then vanish a month or
2.

I need to treat the welded (grinding is done)areas against rust until we finish the welding and start the bodywork.

Most welds are already ground.

I have heard that it is better for the body filler to go right on the metal so I want to wait until all the welding and grinding is done.

Any Ideas???

Thanks

You can also purchase some "Weld through Primer" at your local autobody store.. That will cover areas and protect, and will not have to be removed to weld more... Good Luck!

I second the "weld-through primer". It works great and doesn't have to be removed before welding (hence the name).

On the drilling rig, we keep a case of "Cold Galvanizing" (spray cans). It gets sprayed on the welds. Chip the slag and clean with a wire brush, then spray it on.

I don't know if it would have an adverse affect on automotive primers, but like mentioned above, you'll grind the welds before applying primer anyway. The cold galvanizing will protect it until then. Check with the local welding supply for some of that.

You have to remove any trace of weld thru primer before top coating with any automotive undercoats.

You could use Spies/Hecker 3255 redbrown primer. It's available in quarts or spray cans. Excellent etch primer that can be scuffed later to apply Urethane primer. It is a weld through primer also and if used alone, parts can be left outside for up to 6 months.
