: dynomax or Hedman?

Ok it seems that when I went on a search for a ground clearing/easy to install header, I came to a conclusion that you guy's like the ceramic coated dynomax or the Hedman elite. My question is which one would fit better with a 4-speed?

I recently put a set of Dynomax in my 71. Went in pretty easy. Driverside took some wiggling, but I didn't have to pull the motor. I also had the Z-bar out. I had a problem with the oil-filter fitting between the headers, but I have an 8qt pan not designed for a Chevelle. As long as you don't have really big kickouts, you should be fine.

I've been using ceramic Dynomax for at least 10yrs on several cars (mine and friends) with zero problems. I'm very pleased with them on both BB and SB engines.

I put the hedman elite's on my 71 SS454 4-speed. No clearance problems with the linkage, but I did have to grind some material off of the mounting flange to clear the ARP head bolts. I used a bolt on my McLeod scattershield to mount the return spring. FYI, I also installed the pypes 3" exhaust system and they worked fine with these headers. One note, if you are planning on using 3" exhaust, you may want to check into getting the 3" reducer instead of the 2 1/2" reducer that normally comes with the headers.

i have dynomax ceramic coated..they fit pretty good, had to do some motor lifting and jiggling when we installed, no biggie as they were going in new when the motor went in. i do have some oil filter clearance issues forcing me to only run the short filter instead of the normal longer one..i think maybe its due to the headers bending in toward the pan a bit too much. they are nicely tucked in though, not much of a ground clearance issue with them.

i have set of dynomax headers on my 69 chevelle with a bb and 4spd,they fit real good but had to send them back twice for ceramic coating rusting thru, with in two years apart, bought them new and now they [jethot] wants me to pay to have them recoated:angry: ,i think i will buy hooker comp headers next for what it will cost to have these recoated, bill

Look at the Patriots. I run them with the 4 speed. No clearance issues at all. 2" primaries 3.5" collectors.

I think the 2" Patriots are a dead copy of the older 2" x 3.5" Hedman (or so I am told). I fixed the Hedman flange/ARP bolt interference problem - real easy. I changed the lower bolts to the standard head bolts, instead of the reduced head size that come on the alum head motors. Only issue is you have to change the socket while torqueing the heads.

Thank's guys, I guess the Dynomax wins out. By the way what size pipes should I get, my motor is pretty mild, comp cam 292, mild ported stk heads, steel crank, 750 demon, eldebrock dual plane, MSD ignition, I think my pipes are 2 1/4" and 2" out back, good street car. Thank's again.

If you had trouble with the coating on Dynomax headers, you will be even more dissappointed with Hooker.

My Dynomax have some rust specks on the collectors after 3yrs use but the last Hookers I used had rust spots everywhere after 3 months!!! Maybe they've improved but I don't want any.

How about the Summit coated headers? Cheap, but I am concerned about them lasting. 71 SS small block, weekend driver.

say big james, how long ago did you have the hooker headers? my dynomax are rusting down by the collector area, they were price right and came with a lifetime rust thru but dynomax and jethot had a fall out and jethot sued dynomax for poor quality matreial in the headers and not coating the headers on the inside pipes, that wath dynomax's told me,bill

I went to Dynomax about 3 years ago when I swapped in the 454. They still look nice under the hood but the collectors are getting spotted with some rust. I touch them up with a little high temp paint once in a while and keep on gettin it. They fit well and plug access is a breeze.

The Hookers went bad near the flange at the heads, little pimples popped up and then turned to rust spots, all within a few months, and around the collectors were awfull looking as well. Hooker offered to recoat them for $175 but spark plug access for the small block was awfull and the collector hung lower one side than the other so I sold them with the motor.

Summit painted headers are Dynomax headers. I don't think Summit sells the Dynomax ceramic headers under the Summit name, unless they've changed.
