: Tightening up steering on my 65
chevguy65 Feb 4th, 06, 12:08 AM Hey
I am trying to get my steering and handling as tight as possible on my 65, I have already replaced and beefed up most of the suspension, but I am wondering about the steering itself.
I have seen these quick ratio gear boxes, but somehow do not think that just doing that is all I need, also going to replace the rag coupler, but if anyone has any thoughts or ideas, etc. please let me know......TIA:)
If this is in the wrong spot, please feel free to move it down to brakes and suspension or where it fits in....Thanks
Rich-L79 Feb 6th, 06, 12:37 AM AGR makes a nice quick ratio power steering box which is a quality piece which is a bolt in replacement for your original power steering box. If you have manual steering I don't have much of a recommendation.
chevguy65 Feb 6th, 06, 1:19 AM Yes it is power steering, and TY for the info.
I am trying to get it to handle like the new cars and am almost there. I have just a bit of play in the steering, and with the tires I have on, if I get on a stretch of highway that has been rutted, even a little bit it tends to toss me around.
So, my thinking was going with a quick ratio box, and any other ideas you or others may have. BTW, what is the difference between a quick ratiox stating Quick Ratio 2.5 LTL and one that states 12:1 Steering Gear?
Which is better?
Holy Crap........that is one NICE 65 You Have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rich-L79 Feb 6th, 06, 2:56 PM The box I got from AGR is just a little less than 2.5 turns lock-to-lock. A 12:1 ratio is generally pretty good but you have to be careful with figures like that since some boxes are variable ratios and some don't have the range of motion needed for a Chevelle. If the range of motion is limited (can also be caused by swaping to late model spindles by the way) the turning radius of the car can be restricted which can make u-turns and parking maneuvers a hassle.
One other thing I will throw out. NAPA and probably other parts stores offer a rebuilt power steering box that has a quicker than stock ratio. Since they don't really differentiate the boxes from year-to-year applications, you may or may not get a box with the proper range of motion. The price is attractive, but if the range of motion is restricted or it's a variable ratio box it probably won't perform as you'd hoped. The AGR boxes are specifically tuned to the intended application (call their tech line if you don't know which one to order for your car and given what other modifications you may have made). They come nicely finished and include premium parts with everthing inside being new not refurbished.
I'm sure there are other companies offering similar boxes and some folks have had good luck getting certain boxes (mid-80's Monte Carlo SS, Grand Cherokee, etc.) from salvage yards, but some require modfications to work and as always, new is new and used is used.
Thanks for the comments on my car. Hopefully the wagon will eventually be as nice but it's quite a few years off at this point.

are either of these good?
Rich-L79 Feb 6th, 06, 6:38 PM I can't say on the Power Steering Pros items, but I'd venture a guess they are similar to the ones available at NAPA. Their prices are pretty good so it might be worth it to talk to them about whether the interals are all new or just rebuilt. Also ask if they differentiate boxes with end plates with internal stops and those without internal stops (you want one without the narrow internals stops for a '65). If they don't know, it's a crap shoot if you will get a box with the correct steering range of motion.
The AGR box #292117 has a simpler finish and does not have the fancy finned end plate. Internally the two are the same I believe. It looks more or less stock and it cost a lot less than the 292117:

And sorry, I meant to mention in my earlier post, your car looks pretty slick too! Gotta love a clean '65.
chevguy65 Feb 6th, 06, 7:02 PM Rich,
Thank you and I have added the site you mention into my favorites and will try to get ahold of them tonight.
In the meantime I went out and adjusted my current box and surprisingly it has made a difference, with no binding. I am thinking it may be an aftermarket steering gear on there now so I thought what the heck.
I still think a new one is in order.
