I need help decoding a 68 Chevelle I just bought/found today.
I have the original warranty booklet with the original protecto plate.

Hi

The R , D, I on the left hand side of protecto plate #'s
are supposed to have been on the right side of those #'s
in that order underneath each other. I am not sure if that is an I,
but it looks to be one.

Line 1:
R is for Rochester carb
(first) D is interior paint color, Red.
R2 is exterior paint, Matador Red (R) w/black vinyl top (2).
138378K - SS396 w-dr sport coupe (13837), model year (8), Kansas City assembly plant (K), last six digits are sequence production number starting with vehicle 100001.
(last) D is December, 1967 production date.
The "I" is actually a Chevrolet bowtie logo
Line 2:
T1207ED is engine code, Tonawanda, December 7, ED is 396/325 w/manual trans.
CW1206B is rear axle code, CW is 3.31 open, December 6, Buffalo (B) plant
Line 3:
P8T12 is transmission code, (P) Muncie, 1968, December 12 (T12)
3 is depedent on its position, there are 7 positions. It looks like the 5th position but there's no "3" in that position - only 1 or 4 for A/C. Those with a "3" are: #1-P/S, P/B, #2-62amp Alt., #3-Radio, #4-Disc Brakes

Fisher Body Plate:
12B - December, 2nd week
8575 - plant data processing tracking code (no significance)
ST 68-13817 - SS396 interior trim level
KAN - Kansas City
5634 - Fisher Body unit number
TR 796-B - Med. Red Imitation Leather bucket seats
R-2 - Red lower body, black vinyl top
