My College Professor told me the following: "All gas sold in the NE is from one refinery, all the company does is add some additional chemicals". So, according to him, it didn't really matter what gas you purchased, it was all the same. Personally, I happen to like Sunoco, the cars just seem to run better.

I usually use Mobil, and I've never had any problems with it. I did have some problems with Amoco on two separate occassions, but that may have been the station I was getting it at. I don't know. My comments pertain to 93 octane only since that's all I use , both on and off the track.

well, maybe not all gas comes from one refinery, but your professor was not far off the mark!

There is a LOT of blending that goes on at the local racks around the Philly area (its not the Gulf coast!) but the NE refining complex processes many thousands of BBL/day. The blending racks outside the refineries control the final mixes that head out to the pumps..its fun to watch all the different brand trucks pulling in and out of a truck rack fed by ONE refinery..

The base stock is usually all the same, it's the additive package that is different from brand to brand.

I always found that Amoco 93 would let me run the most timing since it has a high M octane rating.
The Sunoco 94 is my next choice but it would ping when the Amoco 93 would not. I think the Sunoco 94 has a higher R octane rating but the more useful M rating is lower.

The M (Motor) rating is dedrived using a hot engine (more real world use in a street car since we don't run stone cold engines) and the R (Research) rating is based on a stone cold engine. Both tests are done with the same standardized 1 cubic inch test engines.

I believe 92 is the best we get here in Oregon. Maybe it's 93.
Anyway, I use Shell because in the summer months there is no alcohol in it.
Tther brands keep the alcohol in year round, and that stuff requires a jet change, and still doesn't run as well.
I make sure I check the sign on the pump........
I also spoke to the ODOT fuel inspector, and he gave me the skinny on what brands don't use alcohol year round.
Besides, there is a Shell station close to my house.
Ran low 10's on that Shell gas!

Ron

I'm going to try a mix from time to time this year with Sunnoco 110. We don't have Sunnoco stations here though.....

Ditto on the gas in the trunk situation. Sometimes it's fun to let the pump guy look for the fill....we don't have self serve in Oregon, but once they see the cell in the trunk, they hand me the hose!

Is the BP actually 98 octane and is it just sold in specific areas? I believe the highest rated gas we have around here anymore is 93 Sunoco at $ 2.85/gal. I haven"t seen anything rated that high at the pump in years!

Up here in Wis 90+ percent of the gas stations get it from the same tank farm. AS for ratings it is 92 and 93 depending where you go. I stay away from the ethanol added labels. I also will mix it with LL100 aviation fuel. Iv been told it runs around 110 octane. It cost about $.50 a gal more.
