Been looking at all the distributers on e-Bay, what`s going to work best in my 396, it`s pretty much stock with a mild cam. Are the ProComp brand any good? Any other preferences out there? Thanks for input

I'd stay away from cheap aftermarket distributors. Pre-computer Delco HEI distributors are still at junkyards here. Doesn't take much to rebuild them and they run for a long time with a Delco module installed.

The problem with distributors is the number of parameters that have to be matched up. The service manual I have for '68 has at least one page of nothing but specs for different distributors used in various setups.

You need to match up mechanical advance for total amount of advance, starting RPM of advance, and RPM of maximum advance.

You need to match up vacuum advance for total amount of advance, starting vacuum level of advance, and vacuum level of maximum advance.

After those 6 different parameters the rest is pretty trivial and almost every distributor has it.

I would much prefer a new HEI tailored to my setup than trying for an ultimate super distributor.

I had really good luck with an Accell HEI I got from Summit.
