I just purchased a 67 camaro ss/rs. I'm going to start the resto this fall and I've got some rust ??? for you.
The back window channel has a few 1" long holes. Is there channel made to fix these that I can weld in or is it going to have to be fabricated.
Also the car has quit a few areas on the fenders and top of the hood that have had surface rust build from the paint lifting. The metal is still real solid but will sandblasting this be all that it needs to get it all out or will it need a special coating after clean up to keep it from coming back. Theres nothing I hate worse than to throw a bunch of time trying to kill rust only to have it swell back up 2 years down the road.

Thanx RandyB..

Randy, if the holes in the rear window channel are at the bottom, that panel is available. If they are on the sides or the top, that is not, as far as I know available. That area would have to be fabricated. It is not all that hard, done it many times.

As far as the hood and the fenders, again, were is the rust exactly? If it is at the bottom of the fenders, it is coming from the inside out and not a "paint" problem. These areas would have to be replaced. There are many patch panels avalible for these repairs. If the rust on the hood is right over the supports under the hood, you may have rust coming through there as well. But it is common for hoods do get surface rust after paint fails. My own daily driver has some rust on the hood. Yeah, I know that is pretty ridiculous but I do this work all day, I don't feel like doing it at home.

Anyway, give us a few more details and we can be of more help. Inspect the hood and fenders and see if it could be coming from the back side. If it is, you can probably feel with a pick or screw driver to see if the metal is soft in that area, that will be a sure sign.

The fenders and hood are surface rust on the outside where the paint has chipped off in big flakes from a cheezy paint job. Other than that there is no rusting through to the back side.
All the rust is up top of the car from sitting outside, not picking up moisture on the inside lowers from driving.
Thanx RandyB.

if i was you i wouldn't sand blast the any large flat panels like the hood or any large side panels because the sand blasting procedure produces heat and will warp the hell out of the panels and turn them into junk so please be careful

Bob is right, don't EVER sandblast sheetmetal panels! Click on the URL for an example. http://www.autorestorer.com/boards/viewtopic.php?t=1671

Now, listen to us. Sandblasting doesn't give you "Yeah, it needs a little work" kind of damage. It gives you "It is TOTALLY distroyed" kind of damage that is NOT REPAIRABLE by the average guy or even average experianced body man.

I told you what NOT to do but not what TO do. Ok, if you sand this panel down to bare metal you are going to remove a lot of the rust. If after you have striped it there are pits with rust there are a few things you can do. First, a 3M Roloc disc of "Clean and strip" disc will do much better than any other "Mechanical" striper. FORGET wire brushes, they do absolutly NOTHING compared to these tools.
I have found that this will do 99% of the rust removal. After that point use a metal cleaner like DuPonts 225S or or PPG's DX533. This will clean the metal but NOT leave a phosphate coating, you DON'T want a phosphate coating because of the next step. Prime the metal with an etch primer (it contains acids and will aid in the "converstion" of the rust) and then a urethane primer over that. You are now ready to prep for paint.
