I recently bought a 1972 chevelle malibu and I want to put in new front speakers I'm assumin I'll I have to put in the 4x6's my problem is the only way I see for me to change them is for me to take off the crash pad on teh top of the dash board and as far as I am aware the crash pad or what ever you call it should be glued on and I don't want to have to buy a new one is there another way to change them that I am missing or something?

Actually it is COMPLETELY removable. All u have to do is look around. When looking at the dash pad follow to where it meets the dash (the seem along the entire dash) now look underneather the edge of the dash and u should see a phillips head screw. There are....i think 7 on a 72. If u don't understand (the explanation is kinda weird, i know) look at the headlight switch, then look above it. There is one there, then keep following it to the passenger side. After you get those out, just lift up on the front edge of the pad and pull towards you. Good Luck!

It's just like he said. I found it easier to get out by removing one of the inside A pillar mouldings (also easy). Upon reinstallation be sure to press down on the front edge of the dash pad so that it locks into the clips properly.

You might have a tough time getting even 4x6's in there. On all the 4x6's I looked at, the magnets are too big so I had to go with 3 1/2's. The 3 1/2's are pretty weak so now I'm thinking about going with bigger speakers in the kick panels.

Kick panel speakers are great. I have them in my 72 chevelle and they work great. Easy to install.

The problem being with the 4x6 re-pro speakers is that the magnets are round and the originals are square, its tough to get em to fit, takes patients and time,

We put some 3 1/2" in my son's car. When combined with the rear 6x9's they sound pretty good.... much better than the 6x9's only. IMHO

If you're going for a GREAT sound, i can tell you how to do it! Don't go with 4x6's in the front. They have to much high frequency to be placed right below the windshield (the reulst is an intense high frequency sound that leaves MUCH to be desired.) instead, get a good pair of tweeters and make a bracket and install them there. THEN, get a nice pair of coaxial speakers for the kick panels, this will provide a nice range of music. Good luck!

kickpanels are the way to go, get some 6"s or thereabouts
