I have a 71 Malibu 350 car that has a bouncing gas gauge. Reads accurate sitting still but once you get goin it bounces like a ball. Whether the tank is full or empty its all over the place. Bad connecting somewhere? Ca't test it while I'm moving!!!! Any suggestions. Thanks

Is it going half past full? If it is, you have a dirty or weak connection at the sending unit. The sending unit could also be bad.

I have the same problem on my 69 except it does it ALL the time! Someone on this forum said it could be something on the back of the fuel guage that keeps the needle steady. I checked all the connections and grounds prior to reading that post, but haven't gone any further. Thought I'd pass that along.

My guage has always been inacurate. Then I bought an autometer gauge. Its the best thing I have done to my car.

Does the autometer guage work with the original sending unit?

It sure does. I just pulled the dash off and unplugged the thing off the back of the original gas guage, chopped off the plug thing and wired it strait to the autometer guage.

I dont remember exactly but there is a special post around here somewhere that walks you through the steps on fixing it.

Bad connecting somewhere? Ca't test it while I'm moving!!!! Any suggestions. Thanks It is the gauge itself. There is a part inside the gauge (can't remember the name) that holds the needle steady. you will need to replace it or have it repaired. Do a search here where other members have had gauges repaired at.

If you need more help, post in the electrical forum. Opps, see you already posted in electrical

Gas with alcohol made from beans will do a lot more than just make the gas gauge bounce.
