: Problem spraying silver
Ricky-G Feb 1st, 02, 1:39 PM I'm having a problem with a base coat silver. It seems to have a tiger stripe effect in the paint.I've tried different things like spraying one direction, then overlapping my next coat in another direction.I even tried with the gun at a distance with the same striped results.Anybody have similar problems.By the way this is a metalic silver .I've never run into this before.

normie Feb 1st, 02, 2:55 PM Things too look for...
is your gun CLEAN??
Is your paint mixed well??
Are you holding your gun the same direction and distance from the surface??
Have you tried "Fogging" on the last coat??
Are you filtering the paint?
If it is doing it throughout the entire paintjob I would suggest that it is either your gun, gun settings, or paint I would start there then try too eliminate all other possibilities in the prep work, then let it dry, scuff, clean, and reshoot.. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions.. Good Luck! and let us know what the problem was when you fixed it http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

thumper Feb 1st, 02, 3:16 PM sounds like you could have some contaminates in the paint or on your car. try wiping the car of with some sort of prep wipe.
daveseitz Feb 1st, 02, 3:21 PM What type of gun and what pressure is it set at?
BIGMOE65 Feb 1st, 02, 3:25 PM Hey Ricky I just talked to my painter at work and he said you might need to open the spray pattern a little or you are putting on the paint to wet. You dont have to put the paint on heavy since its bc/cc.
Ricky-G Feb 1st, 02, 3:30 PM Yes,the paint was put through a filter, and the gun is clean.I also tryed fogging, still the same.I think I'm gona try a different gun and see if its still the same.I ,.use this gun all the time and this color is a real pain.I even used marbles in the cup to keep the metalics suspended.Well hope this new gun works better,I will respray it on sunday. Thanks for the input.
Ricky-G Feb 1st, 02, 3:40 PM I'm using a binks older style gun with the cup on bottom. It cant be contaminates because it was preped very well.I'm thinking maybe I was putting it on to wet.Pressure was at 45 -50.
70Elky396 Feb 2nd, 02, 5:29 AM I think your problem is either the gun, or the gun not adjusted properly. Things that come to mind are fluid nozzle size, blockage in the air cap, fluid flow not properly adjusted. If you have a blockage inside the air cap, a lot of the material that you are spraying will shoot out of one side of your fan pattern.
When spraying metallics, I just back off the fluid flow so when I squeeze the trigger all the way, the part don't get too saturated with paint.
Good luck!

68racer Feb 2nd, 02, 9:21 AM Ricky,
i had an old devilbiss gun that would do that if you opened the spray pattern too wide it would leave a heavy streak at the top and bottom of the spray pattern. i closed it up some and problem solved. you may also need to fogg the last coat as mentioned before. although with a base-clear system this is usually not necessary.
hope this helps.

MARTINSR Feb 3rd, 02, 1:50 AM Ricky, are you seeing this after you clear or before? If it is before, you may not have a problem at all. Some colors have a horible look and the metallic laying around can give you the idea that it will be "tiger striped" but the clear evens it all out. If you are seeing it after the clear there is a slight posibility that it is in the clear and you are applying it too heavy making it "milky".
Here are a few more possibities:
Too mush solvent added to the paint can do it, be sure to mix accurately.
Applying the clear before the basecoat has flashed properly
Something with solvent is the problem 90% of the time I have found. Not flashing, too slow a solvent, too cold temp (the solvent doesn't flash and gets trapped). So look at what could be causing the solvent to stay too wet.
Try doing a sprayout test like pictured.

Ricky-G Feb 3rd, 02, 1:32 PM I just got done respraying the paint with a new gun. This time it went on the way it should have,no more tiger stripes.I stepped up to a little faster solvent because of the 30 degree temp outside, although my garage was about 70. Dont no for sure if it was the new gun that changed the results or the faster solvent.Any way a big thanks to all who gave advice,I greatly appreciated the help.

RandyB Feb 3rd, 02, 8:50 PM It was the gun, or the gun set up. Too thick anywhere in the spray pattern can cause this. Plus a few others. Being bc/cc put it on dry and mist the last 1/2 coats too be for sure. And stay back a bit on the distance..
MARTINSR Feb 3rd, 02, 10:55 PM It sure sounds like the solvent was too slow to me. 30 degrees out side! It may be 70 inside the shop, but how long has it been 70? Is the surface temp on the car 70 degrees, I doubt it. The base was full of solvent, probably even soft, when the clear was shot, I would bet on it.
As I said before, solvent is the leading cause of trouble...bare NONE.
Of course with modeling (tiger stripes) the gun plays a very important role. But just hearing the temp......that tells me a LOT.

Ricky-G Feb 4th, 02, 9:22 AM I went out this morning and tried my old gun with the faster solvent.{tried it on a old hood} It appears to have been a solvent problem, because the old gun sprayed it without the tiger stripes. My garage temp is normally about 50 in the winter,I kick on the heat a couple hours before I go out there to work.So it could have something to do with the metal still being cold to I guess.I try to stay away from paint work in the colder months, seems to always create problems.Well Thanks again you guys are great.
