: Shipping Engines Cross-Country

I have been doing a little research on shipping an engine cross country. What have you guys experianced in having engines shipped? The best quotes yet have been through a shipping agent company. All the freight companies want twice what the agents want for a quote. I have been told the shipping class is 85. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for yall's help again.

Happy Hot Rodding :D

I've purchased and had a couple engines shipped to me. In all cases, they were transported using Yellow Freight and I did a local terminal pickup where Yellow just loaded the item into my vehicle. On two occasions, the freight charges were collect which I had to pay before receiving the goods.
Seems to be the cheapest way to go...

I sent an engine, and used Yellow Freight... I guess it arrived okay, because the buyer didn't complain...

He paid for it, so I am not sure how much it cost (I think around $500, but Yellow picked it up at my home)...

I think that shipping class 50 is likely the cheapest, because that's what World Products uses via the Yellow Freight company. I purchased an engine from them which was shipped through Yellow Freight, and you have to pay extra $$ to have it delivered by a truck with a hydraulic lift gate that will get the engine crate at ground level for you. However because it will come in a palleted crate, you then need a pallet jack (unless the truck driver is equipped with one). Or you can pick it up yourself with a rental truck that has a lift gate, or a pick-up truck by driving to the Yellow Freight terminal yourself just as Bill did.

For what it's worth, I had to pay $66 extra for a delivery by a lift gate truck, and the total shipping cost was $250, but that may have included a discount that World Product gets since they have a contract with Yellow Freight. Also keep in mind that Yellow frieght only has 18 wheeler tractor trailer trucks, so if they cannot get to where your residence is with a truck that big (such as if you live in a condo) then that will be a problem unless you payed the extra $$ for the liftgate service. But even if you do, you're still going to have to let them know that an 18 wheeler truck won't have access to your residence (if that is the case) and then they will outsource the delivery to a smaller copany that they use which has the 10 wheeler trucks to make the delivery. You should talk to whatever freight company you decide on first. I hope this helps.

Might want to try Motor Cargo, I got one shipped from AZ to CA for $99 and that included lift gate service and pallet jack to my driveway.

This was done thru Engines Direct, they have a good contract with Motor Cargo, but I would guess the price might be simular.

I don't know where you guys live, but whoever told you that Yellow only has "18 wheelers" is not telling the whole story. Many terminals have city "shags" or "flyers" and some even have straight trucks with liftgates. They even use "pups"( no lift gates) which is one trailer of set of doubles. But IMO the easiest way would be to deliver or pick up the engine at the closest Yellow terminal IF they have some way to get their forklift at ground level. If you are shipping the engine be sure that is drained of ALL fluids and banded securely on a pallet and possible even crated. Truck lines are funny about an engine coming off of pallet and rolling around loose in a trailer, smashing up other freight.

Thanks for the help guys.

The engine is new from our shop and will be sent out to the east coast. It will be wrapped in plastic, sitting in a custom built buck and fully crated.

Since the Katrina aftermath prices have shot way up and that is why I am back to researching again. :clonk:

go to freightquote.com; you have to register, but they offer very good prices.

I know you're just trying to be helpful just as most everyone else in this thread is trying to be (myself included) so I don't mean to get into any debate about this, but just to be clear on something, let me add that it was in fact the Yellow Freight company who told me over the telephone that they only have 18 wheeler tractor trailer trucks, and that if that wasn't good enough for the delivery of my engine, then they would ship it over to another smaller freight company that they use, who does have smaller 10 wheeler trucks. And that's just what they did. I live in CT, and that's the way Yellow is, at least over here.

How is this??

A couple of young dependable kids like say a Son and a good close friend in a Mini-P/U driving it over, over a weekend..............

You pay them some money and the gas..

Set up a delivery schedule by phone...

We used to have to "Hot-Shot" our Refractory Gunning Machines and great big Castable Mixers to jobs over-night and did this, but used a local Company that charged an Arm and a Leg!!

I donno, now the way gas is??????

I understand that you are just repeating what someboday at Yellow told you, but I retired from Yellow after 34 years, I guess that I have learned that every Yellow terminal runs their operation differently. So IMO the best suggestion is , if you use Yellow,,,,,, which I highy recommend,,,call the local terminal.:)

i live in new hampshire, and i just bought a hypo 327 330 hp from five star engines in arizona. they paid for the shipping, and i don't know how much it cost them, but it couldn't have been too much because i only paid 1995.00 delivered to my door at home. they used old dominion freight co. they delivered it on a 40ft trailer with a lift gate. the driver was excellent and pleasant. i would recommend them anytime.
