: Oil Pan Interference
bkcraun Jan 30th, 06, 9:25 AM I just pulled my original 307 and dropped in a nice 350/300 crate motor. I have now discovered that at full turn, the oil pan interferes with the tie rods on both sides. Do I need new motor mounts? Aren't 307 and 350 motor mounts the same? Should I just dent in the oil pan on each side? It's too bad because it's a nice chromed oil pan. Raising the motor about 1/2" would solve the problem.
Georgia69 Jan 30th, 06, 10:42 AM Non-stock oil pans are a pain on a Chevelle. What I did on my 69 was flip the tie rods over. In other words, change the outer to an inner, and the inner to an outer. The inners and outers are exactly the same except for the direction the grease fitting points. By swapping them, at least the grease fitting won't punch a hole in the pan. The only downside to this is you have to remove the tire to grease the outer tie rods. I eventually swapped back to a stock pan.
EddieC67ss Jan 30th, 06, 1:41 PM Just ran into the same problem with an after market pan hitting the front cross member. One side of the pan was okay the other was not. Pan was uneven.
1968 Jan 30th, 06, 2:19 PM The mounts for a 350 and a 307 are different.
bkcraun Jan 30th, 06, 2:23 PM Do you know if the 350 mounts allow the motor to sit higher?
Robinls5 Jan 30th, 06, 8:17 PM When i pulled the 307 out of my 70 nomad wagon I had to change the front crossmember mounts from 307s to 350s. also 350s and big block engine mounts will not slide down on 307 crossmember mounts. Chevy made them wider so you have to change crossmember mounts to 350 or BB-- 350 and BB are the same. But then again call BUBBA and EARL, betcha bubba & earl could make it work! Alwhite00 Jan 30th, 06, 9:11 PM Since when are 307 and 350 mounts different? I'm putting a 406 small block in my Chevelle so what mounts do I need? lol :)

1968 Jan 31st, 06, 12:14 AM If your Chevelle came with a 307 and still has the 307 frame mounts, you will need 307 motor mounts.
I do not know if they will allow it to sit any higher. I would guess not. But I could be wrong on that one
bkcraun Feb 2nd, 06, 12:02 AM Shimming the front end eliminated the tie rods from hitting the oil pan. Yes, it will reduce the turning radius of the car, but no hole in my oil pan down the road. And the car still runs straight.
billntenn1972 Sep 18th, 08, 8:32 AM What do you mean "shimming the front end"?
prefectca Sep 18th, 08, 9:11 AM The engine placement is the same on a 307 or 350. The 350 and the big blocks use a torque limiting engine mount that requires different frame stands. The 307 mounts will fit a 454 and a lot of people do this but you may risk breaking the rubber mount if you use 307 mounts on a powerful engine.
BillyGman Sep 18th, 08, 11:42 AM Let me guess, is this a Canton racing oil pan you have? Some brands of oil pans fit a lot better than others do. I don't see any reason why an oil pan for a small block Chevy shouldn't fir with enough clearence for the steering linkage. I had to deal with some serious fitment issues with the oil pan on my engine, which required me to not only flip over the tierods, but use an aftermarket centerlink for a Camaro flipped over, and then mount the inner tierods onto the centerlink from the front side instead of the back as it usually is. But allof that was because of the increased depth of the front of the pan because of the masive 4.75" stroke on my 632 CID engine.
But in your case, having only a 3.48" stroke should in no way cause these issues. Get another oil pan from a competent company. Whatever pan you have now, I'd stay away from anything from places like Mr. Gasket, or Canton Racing if I were you(don't ask me how I know ). Get a Milodon pan. They make good pans. I'd forget about chromed oil pans if I were you. They're usually cheap stuff from what I have seen.

You do not want to use the 307 motor mounts. They have no interference saftey on them so if you break one the engine will lift without anything stopping it. Possibly putting the fan into the fan shroud and other nasty things. If you break a 350 motor mount it will lift about a half inch and hit the interference safety and stop.
