Hi guys,

can somebody help me?!?!.....I will remove my A/C from my 69 Malibu, because I donīt like packed engine compartments.......well, will there be any surprises when I take the A/C unit off my firewall???.....can I just take it off??? Is there a plate available to close the hole in the firewall??? Do I have to take out the dashpanel to remove the A/C??? Will my fan and venting work without the A/C?

Any suggestions or advice????....as you can see, I have no clue what sits behind the firewall under the dash, that is linked to the A/C!!!

Any comment is highly appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks in advance!

Al

I did my neighbors 69 ss last year and it turned out great. Remove the AC box and leave the under dash assy intact. Get a non air box and line it up with the original blower motor hole. AS you will see now their is a door for the old AC that needs to be trimmed down with a grinder to let the non air box fit flush against the fire wall. After trimming the door make a small square plate of metal to fill the opening that the non air box will not cover. Butt weld it smooth to the firewall and smooth out the welds. Use a skim coat of filler if necessary. Now prime it sand it and paint. Now you can fully screw the box on the firewall.
Now for the wiring. on the AC box their is a fan speed 3 spring resistor that needs to be mounted to the non air box. Trim a square hole to mount it on top of the non air box in the flat area, springs mounted inside and not touching any of the metal. Tape your wires up nice and neat and store the old AC box for just in case. WALA your done and only the purist will figure it out and be glad you didn't butcher it up beyond going back original.
I've also done a 69 SS camaro the same way.
If I was smarter I would of taken step pics to show everyone how easy this is.
Just make sure someone is watching from the inside during the sparks and welding.

Buy a cover for the firewall from a company called American Graffiti. It will be the easiest way to eliminate the underhood A/C component's,and retain the function of the blower motor and heater. It's not a perfect piece, but once installed I think you will be happy with the look, and the extra room is great.

Look at my engine pic in my signature, I bought the AC Delete box from american graffiti. Mike's right, theres a little fitment work involved ,but I love it, a much cleaner engine compartment.
