THE BUMPERS ON MY 69 SS HAVE SOME DINGS AND RUST SPOTS. WOULD I BE BETTER OFF JUST REPLACING THEM WITH AFTERMARKET ONES OR WOULD YOU THINK I WOULD BE BETTER OFF RECROMING THE ONES I HAVE.IM ON A LIMITED BUDGET AND DONT KNOW OF ANYONE THAT HAS BOUGHT THE REPROS.

I researched this question last week in the archives. It looks like if you can find a good plater it's ok to have them repaired and plated. Or find a good quality company and buy new from them. I going to order some from Ausleys. I spoke with a guy at a show this weekend and he swears by Chevelle Classics.

FYI- In doing the research, it seems that Bumper Boyz are a bunch of hacks. You may want to stay away from them.

Doc -

The repro bumpers are a thinner gauge steel, so they feel noticeably lighter. And be prepared for lots of "streaks" in the finish because the copper layeris either not buffed out very well or not buffed out at all.

The repro 72 bumpers looked so bad to me that I paid $50 more just to put a replated bumper on a car I was selling. Good luck!

I rechromed mine. Shipping by UPS is not too bad, just wrap them up in cardboard, tape the hell out of it smack on a label and away it goes. There are not very many chromers around any more because of the enviro-nazis. Anyway, I just paid $260 for a "show chrome" job on a back 69 bumper. Prices have also been going up due to EPA and other government regulations. I was happy with my rechromed front bumper. They did a great job. They can knock out dents and straighten them with no problem. Unacceptable bumpers are those with RUST THROUGH. Surface rust no problem. The copper fills in many surface imperfections. Good luck. email me if you need the name of who I used.

I bought a repop 69 front bumper. It is thinner. I don't mind it. kinda trick with the lighter weight and all. The finish was excellent. No streaks or dark spots. I was pleased with mine. $210 shipped to your door.

Hi,

I've used Bumper Boyz twice with my 37 chevy and now with my 'velle. I am very happy with the quality and customer service. They couldn't have been any better to deal with.

The 37 was a replate of my cores, the Chevelle was a core swap.

Andy,
You are very, very fortunate to have had no problems with Bumper Boyz's work. I have a front bumper that lost most of it's chrome after a year and a half, and a back bumper that started peeling after a year. This on my '70 Malibu. At their display at Englishtown last fall, I heard nothing but complaints and grumbling from a great number of people. This has been discussed on this board before, at great length.

rechrome yours, aftermarket are thin and for some reason the chrome does not last on them.
I also was at englishtown and heard a lot of complaints at bumper boyz stand. I was going to pick up a rear bumper from them for my 69
but after what I seen and heard, decided to have mine rechromed.

If you can't locate one at a swap meet, just have yours staightened and rechromed.

There is a place called Lemon Grove Plating in National City. This is a suburb of San Diego. They do quality work. A Chevelle front bumper is approx. $250.00(plus S&H). Turn around time is two full months(no less). But the quality is worth waiting for. In the receiving area are packages from everywhere back East. That should tell you something if everyone is sending their items from the East way out here to the West and are willing to wait long periods. They don't offer any 'discounted' prices. Their phone #(619)264-8053.

I recently bought a rear one for my 72 from ground up, it is slightly thinner gage and lighter than a GM bumper, but it looks great, I'm impressed it fits good too.
I suppose if it's on a garage kept car it should be okay.
