Hi!

Was wondering if anyone had Safelite install a windshield on any of your cars. I know PPG or LOF would be the correct way to go, but being that the car isn't totally original, and I'm a bit of a cheapskate, I was thinking about going with Safe-lite. LOF would cost me $345 just to get the windshield here, w/ out installation. Safelite quoted me $197 installed w/ guarantee.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanks!!

That is kind of a tough one. My first reaction is to go with the one that saves ya the most cash. I replaced the windshield in my 442 with an LOF one. It has the tint at the top and the radio antenna inside the glass. If you go with the cheaper one make sure it has what ya want in it. The cheaper winshield, that a friend of mine put in his 70 Chevelle, may not have a tint or an antenna.

Thanks Steve. The price from the one from Safelite is tinted with an antenna. Does your friends look good on his '70?

Off topic... what year's your 442? Love them!! I had a pretty sweet '69...

I'm real picky about wavy or distorted glass. I've seen some of the cheaper windshields and they look real bad. I don't know where Safelite fits in, and maybe it wouldn't bother you. I have a 300ZX with a slight wave near the bottom and it drives me crazy.
You can look across the glass (like your standing at the side of the car) and usually spot the waves.

No way! Wavy is definitely unacceptable. I'll be watching them like a hawk. I'm definitely going to ask to see their windshield before they put it on. I want cheap, but I want good too. Hope they deliver!!

My windshield is from Safelite and looks exactly like the original unit. No complaints smile.gif

SOrry forgot about this post smile.gif The cheaper windshield that was in a friends Chevelle did not have a tint or an antenna, and it had some "wavey spots". The LOF windshield is still in the box, but it is obviously better quality. I am not sure what brand or where he bought the el'cheepo windshield at.

.....and the 442 is a '71 graemlins/thumbsup.gif
last of the breed.

Update.

Well, I went ahead and had the Safelite guys do their thing. They even special ordered an LOF (Pilkington now) windshield for me after I brought up the fact that I wouldn't settle for anything but good glass. (That's why it took an extra few days.) The guys over there were sympathetic, cordial and professional.

OK. Bottom line. The glass is thinner than the original windshield. The trim doesn't fit flush with the new windshield, but it's close enough not to look bad. My trim didn't fit too flush with the original windshield anyway.

No LOF sandblast insignia on the lower passenger side, it says Pilkington (and the other shtuff). But oh well, like I said, originality doesn't matter a whole lot to me.

The glass looks great!!! What a difference new glass makes!! I can see!!! I'm very happy with how it turned out.

I can't wait to drive at night and not be blinded by oncoming traffic's headlights lighting up a 30 year old scratched to heck windshield.

It's new and I like it! Grand total: $204 and some change. Not bad 'tall. IMO

out.
