You should use a spray. If you check our sponsor, Ground Up at www.ss396.com (http://www.ss396.com) you will see that they have a good line of detail paints. Also try the Eastwood Company at www.eastwoodco.com. (http://www.eastwoodco.com.) Their line of products are top notch, you won't go wrong with them.

Are you painting with the motor in or out?

That's the best way. I would strip the firewall completely using paint stripper followed by a wire wheel used on a drill. To make the stripping easier you can also use 3M pads with a drill attachment. You should be able to find them at Home Depot or a local hardware store. They are green and sort of look like a hard sponge. As it wears out it just gets smaller, but maintains it's abrasiveness until it is finished.

I just finished my engine compartment. I used a DA (36 grit) to taje down the areas I could reach and then a drill and wire wheel for the rest. I used Krylon Rust Tough Enamel and the Semi-Flat. It looks great and while we were putting in the engine. We scratched some of it off with the trans dip stick tube. After getting the motor bolted up, I feathered the area with a Scotch Brite pad and layed a sheet over the car and towel over the motor and reshot some paint on. It blended right in and looks great.

I used about 6 cans each of primer and paint.
