: Rear Dif. Painted!
crazychevelle Jan 24th, 06, 5:29 PM My dad and i finally finished painting the rear dif for my 67 and are very glad with the results. We decided to go with the Por15/Metal Mask route. When i first heard of Por15 i thought it would be a thicker type of paint that would be hard to work with but was very pleased to see how good it stuck to the metal and didn't show much brush marks. We followed all the steps by first using marine clean with wire brushes to get all the gunk off then the metal ready and rinse then apply the 2 coats of por15 followed by the topcoat of metal mask. All the nuts, bolts, washes and etc. were painted with a high temp paint then baked at 450 degrees for 1 hour. The emergency cables were just polished up a bit with a wire wheel then clear coated to give it the nice new metal finish. These little details really make the dif. stand out. So just remember, "It's all about the details!"
Next is the drive shaft and other steering components.
Heres some pics.

P.S. - still have to do some touch ups with the metal mask around pinion shaft and other areas as you might notice.

Why not paint the driveshaft????? And just for the record, I like the diff bolts darker, you have to have some contrast..

he said... It's all about the details, I had to assume he was doing the car as a CORRECT resto., therefore.. Driveshafts don't get painted.. they were never painted, bare steel only!, and the Rear Cover Bolts, same deal... if he is just looking for pretty, then sure go for the contrast, but if going for the correct way to do it.. stick with the non-contrast. Not saying it won't look good or that everyone has to do things the ORIGINALITY route, no way.. but he said DETAILS... not me :)

thenewpappa Jan 25th, 06, 3:32 PM wow this is one nice job you've done there!! Like you, I'm also a sort of detail minded guy. Although I'm not at that stage yet, I have a lot of things like this in my head. I'll save the pic on my hard drive, good reference!!
Aren't you afraid that the paint will chip off by stone or something? Or is the POR metal mask very durable???
Good luck with the rest!
Hal_396 Jan 26th, 06, 11:05 AM I use metal mask often and I'm real happy with the stuff. Be wary of there engine paint. Anitfreeze makes it fade.

thanks for the comments guys, really appriciate it! As for the paint chipping off im not too worried. If you do the steps as they ask for then you should be okay. The good thing about metal mask and other por15 products is that you can always go back and touch up the paint. I find that the paint evens out nicely.
