: Procar Rally Seats?

I know someone posted that they had these seats, and I'm probably going to buy them eventually too, but I have some questions, which will affect whether I need them immediately, or if I will have problems putting them off until later.

1: What was required to mount them on the chevelle floor? (Weld-on brackets? Make your own brackets? How did they fit the floor?) ...I'm trying to decide if I should spend the money now (which I don't really have) so I don't need to redo the finish on the bottom of the floors from burning off the paint.

2: How much room is under the seat? I'm considering putting my LT1 computer under the passenger seat, but need to know if it will fit before I order the custom-length harness, then find out it won't work.

I have a set. I replaced the original bench with them. A great value IMO, they are quite comfortable and hold you in the car really well. I opted for the velour covering, which doesn't get as hot and holds you better than the vinyl.

to answer your questions:

1) They come with brackets designed to bolt into the stock seat bolt holes. I think they have a multiple bracket options for the seats. Since I had a bench I had to drill holes in the floor for the inner brackets. The outers matched up to the bench seat holes fine. I bolted them to the floor with some grade 8 bolts and called it a day. :)

2) They sit pretty close to the floor, a neccessity with the low headroom in a chevelle. My head used to hit the roof all the time with the stock bench. It still comes close with the procar seats. If I had to guesstimate I'd say you have maybe 2-3" under the seat. The seat position adjustment bar may get in the way of that though. You could maybe bolt the computer up behind the dash on the passenger side somewhere?

I have the Procar Elites. They should be on the same platform as Brian's seats. I ordered mine through SCAT out of California. The seats had a 2 week lead time, but the brackets had an 8 week lead time. I already had all of the carpet out, working on floorpans when I decided on the upgrade. so, I decided to go the way of the custom angle iron brackets. Just strong 3"x4" angle iron that I had a nearby shop "chop up" into 3" wide segments. Took about 4 hours of labor getting the centering and angling to feel right. The seats themselves have verticle mounting provisions which have "low/medium/high" hole selections.

So, given the latter, maybe even the new-replacement brackets provide a bit of adjustability?? Care to take a look Brian?

edit- and mine cost less than $50. :D

I got mine from Summit, no lead time. If you look, they have several different bracket's avaliable, depending on what seat's originally came in your car. With the right bracket's, installing them was a breeze.

This is off topic, but Mike, what kind of center console are you using there? I looked at the interior pic on your sig link.

It is from a mid 80s camaro.
The lid for the storage is a custom (crappy) thing I did. I got it mostly becuase B&M makes a shifter plate for the Megashifter to put it directly into that console. I think I payed $125 plus some shipping for it new.

Derek,

A couple of months ago, I originally posted that I had a pair in my son's '72 Malibu (thanks for posting a pic from my showroom, but you have to tell me how you did it)!

As was stated by 69boo307, it is a great value IMHO, they are very comfortable and support you in the car really well. In my neck of the woods, it doesn't get real hot (77 deg F in the summer), so I opted for the vinyl covering, which matches the vinyl on the back seat. I'm also a original bench convert.

to answer your questions:

1) I purchased the seat brackets ($50 each from Summit) designed to bolt into the stock seat bolt holes. Since I had a bench seat, I had to weld in the bracket seat adapters. They fit okay, I should have spent more time leveling them, so they are not exactly level. The outers matched up to the bench seat holes perfectly.

2) I would have to say that you have maybe 2-3" under the seat. The seat position adjustment bar does block some access.

I believe that Summit had a better deal (+/- $100) than going direct through Scat. The truck freight was painful ($85), but the seats were not damaged. The brackets arrived first since they went UPS.

I'm currently working on a '70 GTO (for my 1.5 year old son) and had the original GTO bucket seats re-foamed and re-covered. They look good, but after spending some time in the Rally's, I may have to pop for another set (my wife will be happy when I tell her that!).

There are a ton of possible combinations from the wrecking yard that may be more comfortable and certainly less expensive. Take a look at my consol and Power Leather seats..... Total cost less than $450.00. The most expensive part was the matching upholstery of the rear seat at $600.00!!!!

Derek,

For your LT1 computer - is there any chance it might fit on top of the glovebox? My Accel computer fits there with a ton of clearance, but I have a different dash and probably a lighter computer. Just a thought, I've never seen the Procar seats.

I'd LOVE to have some seats from a newer WS6 trans am or the like. I looked for about 2 months before I settled on aftermarket. Like Redrum said, the biggest problem is the "off-grey" colors of the newer interiors. Even after you find a set, the leather is all cracked where the person slid in and out becuase they couldn't get their belly under the steering wheel. :D

I'm not sure about above the glovebox, but with the factory AC dash, there's no room behind the glove-box. I also need to keep it easy to get at for tuning it with my laptop.

The seats are very cool looking, and look like they belong in a muscle-car.

Having owned 2 4th gen f-bodies, I can say that the Procar seats are MUCH better!

Why not look into something like a Corbeau or Recaro bucket. I know Corbeau even makes brackets for chevelles. If you look around these seats can be had for around 200 or so each. A bit more expensive but provide far better support lateral support.

There are a ton of possible combinations from the wrecking yard that may be more comfortable and certainly less expensive. Take a look at my consol and Power Leather seatsI actually would prefer the look of stock Chevelle buckets (which I have a pair that needs recovering) but I need some side-bolstering to keep me from sliding around on the road-course. I want to keep the "muscle-car" look and feel to the interior.

I'm trying to go for a very subtle, almost-stock looking interior, and those just won't fit the look I want.

I currently have a black cloth bench interior, and want to convert to a stock-looking white bucket interior. The only non-stock items will be the seats, seatbelts, gages, and shifter. The seats will be the Procar Ralleys recovered in white '69 Chevelle upholstery, seatbelts will be retractable with shoulder belts for convenience and safety, gages Autometer "Phantom" white-faced mounted in the stock locations, and the shifter will be a stock looking staple-shifter modified for overdrive.

Everything else will be repro "stock" parts including the console and rosewood steering wheel.

The only other option I'm strongly considering, is adding some side bolsters to the stock seats, which could probably get pretty complicated, and the seats are heavy enough as it is.

I can definitely understand the desire to have a stock feeling interior. If that is your mission then I think the Procar seats are probably one of the best choices. As far as adding side bolsters I don't think the weight will be that much of an issue. It could be done but would take some work to do it right and make it comfortable.

Just spotted this post and thought i would chime in...

I also had the Procar rally seats- and everyone has pretty much nailed the info on them... very comfortable, classic look, etc etc..

However there is a couple things...

The rally seats are actually pretty small physically. Compared to stock bucket seats the backs & bottom are several inches shorter and narrower. The photos on thier site don't show it- but if you look at the actual dementions you will see. The elite seats like Mike has, and the recaro & corbeau seats are larger and closer to the stock size.

Now the second thing is, I don't know if you are a big guy or not- but if you are- the seats MAY not be as comfortable for you. Because of the huge bottom & side bolsters- You really sit IN these seats. If you are big you will sit ON them and it won't be as comfortable.

I'm a big guy (5'11 245lbs) and they were still ok (a little tight, but eventually the bottom bolsters "broke in" and i fit in better instead of "on" them... but I did have complaints from a few other guys bigger than me who rode in it.

Personally- If i were to do it again, i think i would find a set of stock seats out of a 94-99 monte carlo/lumina/grand am/grand prix etc etc and have them re-covered with classic looking vinyl stiching & firmer foam on the bolsters.

I have seen a few of these done up and they can look really close to stock- and still be very comfortable.

Anyway- just some thoughts from another guy who had these seats.

What I'm basically looking for is something half-way between a stock chevelle bucket, and a racing seat - not a modern bucket seat, or anything that looks too "sports-car" for a mostly stock-interior'd musclecar.

Then the rally seat should be just about perfect for you!

Wow, those look very nice  I usually don't like the look of modern seats in an old car, but those look very good.

Like others have said, it's truly a bolt in deal when using the correct mounting bracket. My biggest headache was working around the driveshaft safety loop bracket...had to completely remove it.

They are awesome seats for comfort and you will like them.
