Ok guys, I have a 64 2 door wagon That I slowly plan to convert into a low budget good driver, almost pro touring but not quite. I already have acquired a PST polygraphite front end rebuild kit with stock 69-up disc spindles with dual diaphram booster, Hotckiss 1 inch front drop springs, 15/16 front sway bar, 7/8 rear sway bar and factory boxed arms, cadillac style 11 inch rear disc kit, and a Grand Cherokee steering box all of which are still waiting to be installed. My plan is to eventually upgrade the front discs to 12 inch rotors and Suburban calipers(to compliment the rear discs) on the existing A body spindles and install an LT1 with a T56. Now you know where I'm at, while I know that all of these parts aren't the best like I said this is on a budget.

I have 18x8 Eagle Alloys with BFG G-Force Radials. I've installed the rims and tires and the car handles HORRIBLY with the stock suspension, it's almost dangerous. What is causing this? I know that installing the parts I have should help some but is there anything else I NEED to get before I rebuild the front suspension? I'm especially curious about the tall ball joints. Any suggestions, ideas or comments welcome. Thanks,
Nat

I've installed the rims and tires and the car handles HORRIBLY with the stock suspension, it's almost dangerous. What is causing this? My brother has the same problem with his '60 impala with worn out suspension and 17x8 255/50s on front. The wide tires want to follow every crack in the road. Freshening up the suspension will help a lot, but you'll still feel the road with wide front tires. Power steering will help also.

I'd suggest talking to Marcus at SC&C about running his tall ball-joints from Howe Precision. You may be able to run just the uppers with your stock arms. (???)

Good luck with your LT1/T56 swap  Look back a few weeks at my LT1/4L60e topic if you need ideas. This is getting to be a pretty popular swap as the LT1s are now getting cheap enough for us budget-builders. :)

Thanks for the reply, the problem is exactly what you describe, the car is fine on good flat pavement but even the slightest dip at speed and the car tracks with a mind of it's own. The wagon currently hasstock style powersteering, I was hoping that freshening up the front end and adding the quick ratio ps box would help.
What you're saying about using the tall upper ball joints with stock control arms is something I was curious about. I already have the new ball joints in the PST kit, anyone know if it would be worth it upgrading to the tall uppers for my rebuild?
Looks like I'll be switching back to the old cragars until I get to the suspension.

I think the lt1/T56 swap would be great in the wagon, We treat it more as a daily driver(actually my girlfriend drives it a lot) It's a great platform for doing mods since it was never a factory muscle car. My baby is the 68 convertible big block waiting in the wings.
