I have a technical question. I am to the point on my 66 SS where the trunk needs paint. The info. I have read shows that the paint should be gray/white. However, this car was a one owner and I am sure the color in there now is black/grey. Any comments? Was the color of trunk paint dependent on exterior color? (the car is red). Thanks for the help.

The color of the trunk spatter paint really depends on the build date and assembly plant. GM switched from a gray and white to an aqua and black splatter in mid year production of 66. The factories didn't waste anything, so whatever existing gray amd white was used up before using the new color. So a lot of 66 models got the aqua and black paint, which was used through 1972.
This has always been a bone of contention in national Chevelle shows. I have interior and trunk judges that I have to point out these same facts. They want to deduct points from a 66 with aqua/black trunk because they think that all 66s should have the gray/white splatter paint.
Also, the rattle can trunk paints that resto supply companies sell are too dark compared to the original splatter paint the factories used.

Thanks for the responses skip/fred. My car was built dec. 65. I guess to be on the safe side, I will go with gray/white.

I'm soon to refinish my trunk too ('71 Malibu). I have read you need to spray a coat of clear over the spatter paint to protect it from moisture as the spatter paint is not sealed.

I know the trunk spray the is sold by Eastwood requires a clear coat. I used some GM trunk spray, which required no clear coat, and it covered very well. It is a bit pricey, though.

ive personally used fleckstone and was impressed by the closeness. surley you wouldn't try it in your showpiece, but in a daily driver its great looking.start with bright white primer,then fleckstone,top off with FLAT CLEAR and your good to go.
