Ok heres the deal, I picked up a 97 Grand Cherokee box and just received it. I just checked the turns lock to lock and it's right at 3.1 - My stock box in my 70 chevelle is like 3.2 - I have heard anything from 2.75 to 3.25 turns lock to lock for a GC box. I thought I got screwed because the box I just received is 3.1 turns.
I have a friend at work that happens to have a 95 Grand Cherokee and I physically went out and turned it lock to lock and it was 3.1 turns.
Will the GC box have a different "feel" to it or am I wasting my time swapping it out? Do I need another box to get around 2.75 lock to lock?
Is anyone running a GC box? How is the response?
Thanks for any and all comments.

LK,
I might be totally off on this, but maybe once the box is installed in your car, you may have the 2.75 turns you desire. The stops on your steering arms might be the determining factor not the box. Again, this is just a thought.

I just yesterday installed a 95 Jeep GC box in my 68. I haven't started or driven it yet, so I can't say for sure if you'll notice any differences. BUT, from what I understand, the newer Jeep boxes had a slightly larger torsion bar inside, and the diameter of the torsion bar dictates the stiffness of steering felt at the wheel. I don't remember exact numbers, but the Jeep box had the largest dia (meaning stiffest at the wheel).
So, while your steering box ratios stayed nearly the same, the new Jeep box should provide more feedback at the wheel, and not feel like the overboosted 70's cars.

That's good information, Hopefully it all works out. Bulb 122 - If you get the car up & running please post back with results.
If anybody has a GC box in a running vehicle please post with your thoughts.
Thx.

The 1992-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee power steering gear should have 3.1 turns lock to lock. All of those gears have the same valve effort (a nominal 23 inch-lb valve) which should be a moderate effort at the steering wheel (not too heavy and not too light).
Every comment that I have ever read where the Grand Cherokee gear was installed in a Chevelle has been very positive.

The limiting stops on the spindles/a-arms will limit the actual turns to the 2.75. I've put these on 2 a-bodies - my 65 Elky and 1 in a 66 SS for a friend and they are all well received by anyone driving them. The fact that they are tight, non-leakers and the 2.75 ratio make them an automatic swap for me on any future projects. Steering effort is good with a nice feel. You made a good choice. OLDED

my daily driver is a 96 Grand Cherokee (or a ZJ). i love the feel of the wheel. not to heavy, not to light. i cant wait to put one in the velle. i think it will really make it feel like a race car, or more of like what a muscle car should feel like.
